5-Star DB Su'a Cravens Commits to USC: What Does This Mean for Trojans Football?

Edwin WeathersbyJun 7, 2018

Well, Su'a Cravens told all of us that June 6th would be the day he made his announcement, and today is June 6th; Cravens has indeed announced.

He will be attending USC in the fall of 2013, and his recruitment is over.

The Trojans were always the heavy favorite in this race, as we all know that Cravens is from Southern California, grew up a USC fan and even told Scout.com several weeks ago that his mother wanted him to go to USC.

Today is Cravens' mother's birthday, and when he announced that this would be the day he made his commitment, it was just about a forgone conclusion that USC was the choice.

A 5-star prospect via Scout.com and Rivals.com, Cravens is ranked No. 5 and No. 8, respectively. ESPNU ranks him No. 14 overall with a high grade of 88 on their board.

From Vista Murrieta High School in Southern California, Cravens is a 6'1", 205-pounder that can play an array of positions.

Whether he is lined up as a free safety, strong safety, outside linebacker, running back or wide receiver, chances are that he is the best player on the field.

Cravens is an outstanding athlete that also has great play strength, speed, quickness, agility, natural playing instincts and play-making ability.

He could get some looks as a RB at USC, but with the Trojans having commitments from Ty Isaac and Justin Davis, they're not in desperate need for rock toters anymore.

In fact, Cravens, who could grow into an OLB, told Scout.com this morning that USC has told him he will play safety.

This is another huge coup for USC and means a ton to their recruiting efforts as once again, the Trojans keep a high-profile prospect in their backyard, in their backyard.

Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska and UCLA were the finalists for Cravens, but he also held offers from national powers such as Alabama, Florida and Notre Dame.

Cravens is USC's eighth commitment for the 2013 class, seventh commitment considered by at least one publication to be one of the best 100 players in the country and fifth commitment to be rated 5-stars by at least one publication.

USC needed to add more depth to their secondary this cycle, specifically at safety. Cravens not only gives them that but also is a player that is likely to start and be a standout at some point in his career.

This also is a commitment of two players of sorts, as Cravens could also grow into an OLB and be a Dion Bailey type of player for Monte Kiffin on defense, where he plays both safety and outside 'backer in certain packages.

Huge commitment by a huge player to a huge program. Huge deal.
