WWE Vs. UFC: Which Is Really Worth Your Time and Money?
First off, this article is not about which one I think is best, nor is it intended as a blow to either the wrestling or MMA fan. Just pure fact and opinion. While it is true I am a wrestling fan, I am also an MMA fan.
So I will not talk negative about one and not the other. Same with positive things. With all of that said, let's get started.
Wrestling reaches more people worldwide every month than MMA; it is a fact. Wrestling has four shows a week with another coming soon. Three of them currently are the WWE's, and it is about to add another. TNA has one show.
MMA has UFC, which is the largest and most successful MMA company. But at best unless there is a marathon, it only hits homes two or three times a week on regular TV. So the time to watch it is scarce compared to wrestling.
While other companies exist, WWE and UFC are the leaders of their field. That is obvious. So mainly these stats are on them and not so much on all companies.
When Elite was around, it was mainly PPVs when we saw it. So people had to pay to see Kimbo Slice and others. It was one of the reasons they went down.
Viewership is everything. When you don't have people watching, then you don't have anything.
Lets talk about UFC for a minute
While the fights are real and have excitement, they do end fast many times. So you could buy a PPV and see five minutes of fighting in one fight at best. Usually they have at least three, which is good.
Boxing makes the mistake of charging $50 for a PPV and only having the fight last one minute, so you forked out $50 for nothing. So they do a kindness by having more than one fight.
They have similar things to boxing like weigh-ins and press conferences to help promote fights. Also when you see a fight, blood usually comes into play, which despite us thinking otherwise is a draw to people.
Sort of like NASCAR—you go for the crashes. Even though many will say they don't, they really do. If blood comes into play, usually a fight stops, but the excitement builds.
You also see different forms of fighting, whether it is a boxer type or jujitsu. Maybe a grappler or two. They sometimes pit two guys against each other with different fighting styles to make everything interesting.
However, sometimes that it is a bad thing because unlike in the movies, the little guy does not stand much of a chance usually. A particular fighting style may not work well against another, which is the reason some look more dominant in a fight.
One person may be able to take a person out in one minute, but go down to another fighter in five because of the fighting style they have. So to see which fighting style will prevail is fun to watch.
Now to the WWE.
Unlike UFC or most MMA organizations they have a weekly show, and since it is scripted, the matches usually never end quickly at all. You also get a couple of weekly shows too. So wrestlers get more attention.
Also, since it involves scripts and a creative team, watching it is easy because it is a TV show like House, Grey's Anatomy, or ER. Yet it has kind of a real feeling, and many times you forget it is scripted.
Also, when you order PPVs you always get your money's worth. As I mentioned a wrestling match usually does not end quickly. Also unlike UFC, it always has four or more matches.
At the WWE's Royal Rumble PPV it had four matches, all Championship matches. UFC can't always do that because of its champions having to rest or take time off from fighting for a while to nurse an injury.
If that happens in the WWE, then they give the title to someone else or have a tournament for it.
Also it has promos and drama that UFC does not always have. It may in fights, but nothing outside of them, unless it is a promotion for the show or something.
One thing the WWE and wrestling period has over MMA is that it has gimmicks to its action, such as a ladder match, Steel Cage, elimination chamber, and others. Also wrestling can have more than one person in the ring to wrestle at one time.
MMA has to have one on one, no tag team stuff. So you don't always have an interesting fight. In the WWE or wrestling, stuff is choreographed usually, which means they will make sure there is interest in it.
Of course MMA is not choreographed, so it could be boring until the end. Also the back and forth makes for a good match in wrestling. One man dominating the whole time is not always interesting.
All in all both are wonderful things to watch, but if you have to spend money on either one wrestling is the better place to go. You get your money's worth every time. You don't always in MMA PPVs.
Not that they are not interesting, but sometimes they let you down. Not that wrestling has not had its stinkers.
