WWE Extreme Rules 2012 Results: Layla Defeats Nikki Bella to Win Divas Title

At Extreme Rules 2012, Layla El made her surprising return to in-ring action and won the Divas Championship.

Initially, Nikki Bella was scheduled to defend her title in a rematch against Beth Phoenix. But at the last minute, Eve Torres, the Executive Assistant to John Laurinaitis, informed the Glamazon that she is not medically cleared to compete and will be pulled from the match.

This led Nikki to assume that she had the night off. However, Eve declared that she will defend her title against a mystery opponent (My money was on Kharma).

Eve then added, "Don't worry. It's not Kharma."

(Crap! Well, how about AJ?)

The Bellas made their entrance and Nikki cut a promo about how she will be the longest-reigning Divas Champion. Her sister Brie chimed in, stating that "they" will have a lengthy reign.

Suddenly, the Lay-Cool music hits and out comes Layla El.

The match starts, and Layla looks surprisingly good. I think she used a La Magistral pin variation at one point.

Of course, that didn't stop the Chicago crowd from chanting "We want Kharma!"

Nikki begins working on Layla's knee. Remember that Layla had knee surgery and was out for a year.

Layla fought back and hit Nikki with crossbody. After a few more reversals, Nikki is pushed to the bottom floor. The ref does the "fair recovery" routine while his face is turned away from Nikki.

Twin Magic Time!

Brie rolls in and goes for the facebuster. Layla counters it and hits Brie with a nasty hangman's neckbreaker and then covers Brie for the pin.

One, two, three!

Layla El joins Beth Phoenix, Mickie James, Melina and Michelle McCool on the list of Divas who have won the Divas Championship as well as the now defunct Women's Championship.

As expected, Nikki was a transitional champion, and this short reign only adds to the rumors that the Bella Twins are leaving WWE when their contracts expire.

At the end of the day, it was a decent match. It wasn't "Gail Kim versus Melina" good, but it wasn't "Kaitlyn versus Maxine" bad.

Is Layla ready to be the next face of the Divas Division? And when will Beth Phoenix get her championship rematch?

Hopefully, we will get an answer to these questions on the next few episodes of Raw.
