Tottenham vs. Blackburn: Player Ratings in Spurs' 2-0 Domination of Rovers
Did any Blackburn fans actually think their Rovers were going to get anything out of Sunday afternoon's match at White Hart Lane?
Tottenham absolutely dominated lowly Blackburn, preventing the 19th-place club from reaching out of the relegation pit and putting a three-point lead on Newcastle for the fourth and final Champions League spot.
In the first half, Spurs was firing at will on Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson who has, to put it mildly, suffered terribly this season, collecting just three clean sheets and conceding an average of 2.1 goals in his 33 appearances. Rafael van der Vaart put the home side up in the 22nd minute when Gareth Bale's header went off the crossbar and the Dutchman volleyed in the score.
The second half was much of the same, as Tottenham ended the game having possessed the ball well over 70 percent and Blackburn never got a shot off. Luka Modric was as good a field general as ever, and Sandro did surprisingly well in the middle of the pitch.
Tottenham looked remarkably efficient against a Blackburn side that showed little ambition the whole match and seemed to have accepted the fact that it is being relegated.
The team looked excellent overall in the easiest win they've collected all season. How did the individual players grade out? Check out these player ratings and tell me if you agree.
Goalkeeper
1 of 4Brad Friedel: 7.5
He had absolutely nothing to do until the second half as Blackburn didn't even get a shot off for the entire match. Friedel plucked a late chance out of the air, but other than that the American was invisible. A clean sheet is a clean sheet, and this afternoon's was lucky No. 13 on the season.
Defenders
2 of 4Kyle Walker: 8.0
Holy cow! Did you see Walker's free kick in the 75th minute? What a thing for a defender to have in his arsenal—and on his highlight reel! Walker had a great, solid game throughout, as the young full-back erased any doubts he's worth a spot on England's roster in the Euro finals.
Younes Kaboul: 7.5
Kaboul was energetic along the left sideline and held it for the entire match. He's Tottenham's long-term fixture at the centre-back position, and his support of the left-back position when Walker went up to attack showed he fits in well.
Danny Rose: 6.0
Clumsy and awkward play all match. Poor crosses and sub-par handling of the ball. Rose was the only low spot on Tottenham's day.
William Gallas: 7.0
Gallas stopped a couple of late chances, but he was also nearly invisible, as Blackburn never had a chance at goal for the full 90 minutes.
Midfielders
3 of 4Gareth Bale: 8.0
I don't know how he did it, but Bale turned what could have been a bore for the Spurs bench and everyone at White Hart Lane into an exciting, cheerful match. His runs along the left sideline were spirited all game, and his chances were many.
Disappointed he didn't get the score in the 22nd minute, but his header bounced off the crossbar and onto the sure foot of teammate Rafael van der Vaart. Energetic, enthusiastic play from the young Welsh winger.
Luka Modric: 7.5
We saw great technical ability, countless successful passes and a very, very solid performance from the usually solid Croatian. Modric led the midfield well and was the reason why Tottenham kept possession for more than 70 percent of the match.
Sandro: 8.0
Strong performance from the rarely-used Brazilian. Sandro stayed true to his place in the middle of the pitch and supported the defense when needed. He was a big reason why Blackburn hardly had a chance against Friedel. Great job helping the midfield. Second-best player on the pitch—behind Walker, of course.
Aaron Lennon: 7.5
I love seeing Lennon the pitch. With each appearance the youngster makes, the more I think he could fit into a starting role for Spurs. Very good play, as he balanced his time on either side of the halfway line and rarely strayed more than 25 yards away from midfield. Lennon was disciplined to his position, but he took several shots when it was smart.
Giovani Dos Santos: 7.0
Dos Santos came in for Lennon in the 84th minute. He linked up well with Modric.
Jake Livermore: 7.0
Livermore came in for Sandro in the 86th minute. Nothing much of note; he fit in to the midfield seamlessly.
Forwards
4 of 4Rafael van der Vaart: 8.0
Van der Vaart was in the right place at the right time in the 22nd minute to take advantage of Blackburn's poor marking and Bale's header off the crossbar. He was always threatening to score, but Rovers never had an answer for the Dutchman, who's come along in form in recent weeks.
Emmanuel Adebayor: 6.0
Adebayor was inconsistent for most of the match and couldn't string anything together except for his run at goal in the second half with Bale. He should have scored in the first half with the several times Rafael van der Vaart fed him the ball.
Not without drive and passion, so that's saying something, but he's looked a bit down in form in recent weeks. Tottenham needs to make a decision on him soon, and this up-and-down form isn't helping Daniel Levy and the rest of the Spurs front office.
Jermain Defoe: 7.0
Defoe came in for Van der Vaart in the 88th minute and made one run at goal. Would have liked to have seen more of his speed against Blackburn's lackluster defense.
