College Football Recruiting 2013: Power Ranking the Top 10 Dual-Threat QBs
Over the past few years, we've seen many recruiting publications have a specific category for QB prospects that not only can make plays with their arm, but also are good runners.
It's called the "Dual-Threat QB" category. To give you an idea of who are considered dual-threat QBs, think along the lines of Michael Vick, Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, Steve Young, Terrelle Pryor, Vince Young and Denard Robinson.
Today, I'm just going to quickly power rank the top dual-threat signal-callers in the 2013 class and give you some names that could be next two-way headaches for defenses.
10. Damion Terry
1 of 10At 6'3", 210 pounds, Terry hails from Pennsylvania. He's a playmaker in and outside the pocket, as he can annoy defenses play after play. Terry is a thick-bodied QB so when he takes off to run, it's not easy to bring him down.
A Michigan State commit, his style could be dynamite in East Lansing, as defenses will be tired from the MSU power running game, then to have Terry drop back on QB draws will be tough to stop.
9. Bucky Hodges
2 of 10I think Hodges will be able to see over the line just fine because he's 6'6".
Tack on 220 pounds to that height, and you see why their may be some Logan Thomas comparisons for this Hokies commitment.
A Virginia native, Hodges will go to Blacksburg, refine his footwork and see if he can develop into a starter for Frank Beamer.
8. Cord Sandberg
3 of 10A Florida native, Sandberg is a lefty that reminds me of Tyler Cameron just a bit, but he's not as thick at 6'2", 200 pounds. Nonetheless he's athletic in the pocket, has solid foot quickness and good escapability.
Sandberg is a great fit for a spread offense, as he has a good feel for the game, sees the field well and will take advantage of running lanes if given them.
7. J.T. Barrett
4 of 10Barrett is from Texas and is 6'1", 205 pounds. He has great delivery quickness in his release, sees the field very well and has solid instincts.
He works a ton out of the shotgun, is a passer and not a thrower. Barrett sets up quickly, makes a decision on what he wants to do and gets the football out of his hand quickly.
He's committed to Ohio State.
6. Troy Williams
5 of 10Williams isn't the biggest, but he's a winner. At 6'0" and and about 175 pounds, Williams just gets it done on the field. He has a quirk in his release, but he does what he has to do to get the ball out.
He reminds me a little bit of Gavin Dickey, as he just plays with confidence and conviction. UCLA, Florida and Washington are some of his top offers.
5. Matt Alviti
6 of 10Alviti is just about 6'0" tall and doesn't look like much on the hoof, but you see the tape and see a kid with a quick drop, great feet, solid arm strength from a 3/4 delivery and competitiveness.
He has some moxie to his game, knows when to run and when to stay in the pocket and still take a chance. He fits the spread option offense perfectly.
Alviti is committed to Northwestern.
4. Malik Zaire
7 of 10At 6'1" and 190 pounds from Ohio, Zaire is a good one. He's a thick-bodied and stout-looking QB, with great poise, field vision and command of his offensive scheme.
Zaire is athletic, can attack outside of the pocket on boots, rolls and sprints and get the ball downfield on the run. He shows great decision making and is has good speed as a runner.
He's committed to Notre Dame.
3. Johnathon McCrary
8 of 10McCrary has a chance to be big-time down the road. From Georgia, he stands 6'3", 180 pounds and has all the tools needed to be a good QB in college.
McCrary has good arm strength, athleticism, is instinctive and creative as a runner, and has good speed. He just needs to refine some fine points of his craft and learn his college offense.
He is committed to Vanderbilt.
2. Chris Johnson
9 of 10Johnson is shooting up boards as he gets more and more exposure in the camps and combines circuit. A Texas native, the 6'4", 210-pounder has a very high ceiling.
Johnson possesses raw skills and athleticism, but you can see the arm strength, play speed and ability to make plays from and outside the pocket. He just needs seasoning because he's physically capable of doing it all.
Johnson is committed to Baylor.
1. Tyrone Swoopes
10 of 10Not only is Swoopes the consensus top dual-threat QB in the country for 2013, ESPNU also ranks him as the top overall QB prospect and No. 9 overall.
At 6'5", 220 pounds, he has excellent arm strength, can attack the ball to all levels of the field and is getting more and more accurate. Swoopes has potential all through his game, is a natural runner in the open field and has speed to outrun defenses in a flash.
This QB is committed to Texas.
