Why Someone Must Smash the WWE Championship
We've all seen the iconic image of an emotional Shawn Michaels kneeling down in the center of the ring at WrestleMania XII, staring at his newly won WWE Championship. If we were to watch a video of Michael's emotional moment, we would hear Mr. McMahon's legendary sound bite, "The boyhood dream has come true for Shawn Michaels."
We know what Mr. McMahon said on commentary after Shawn Michaels' Iron Man match win over Bret Hart, but what was Michaels saying in his head as he was kneeling down, staring at the WWE title in his hands? What was Shawn Michaels thinking?

If the belt that Shawn Michaels had in his hands wasn't the beautiful "Winged Eagle" belt, but instead looked something like the current WWE Championship belt, I believe what he would have been thinking was, "My, my, my—what an ugly piece of (beep)."
Who would blame Michaels for thinking such a thing? In my honest opinion, the current WWE Championship design is possibly the ugliest design of any WWE belt in history. Some might argue that the now-defunct WWE Hardcore Championship belt is the ugliest, but I would say that it at least matched the spirit of the hardcore division.
The WWE Championship's history is one of prestige, honor and glory. It is the most coveted prize in WWE history. However, I wouldn't believe this to be true if I were judging the Championship by its current looks alone.
What's with all the diamonds? Is that a dead eagle at the very top of the belt? Do medical school graduates' diplomas say, "Doc of Medicine"? No, they say "Doctor of Medicine." So, why does the WWE Championship title say "Champ" instead of "Champion"?
Current WWE Champ CM Punk, as well as former WWE Champs John Cena and Miz have also weighed in on the ugliness of the WWE Championship's current design in a WWE.com interview.
In the interview, CM Punk called it "gaudy and ugly," and said he needs a "dignified title, not a blinged out rapper accessory." John Cena claimed, "Either classic or new, it needs a change." Miz awesomely said,
"It needs to look less like a toy and more like a title. I mean, think about it, when football players win the Super Bowl or basketball players win the NBA Finals, you'll usually see one of the players sporting a championship from WWE. But, it's always the World Heavyweight Title. It doesn't take that much to figure out why that is.
"
That's all fine and dandy, but how do you get rid of the current WWE Championship design?
I did not write this article just to complain about the repulsiveness of the current WWE Championship design. Rather, I wanted to offer an easy way to get rid of it.
At the 2012 Revolver Golden Gods Awards Ceremony, Chris Jericho accepted and destroyed CM Punk's award for "Most Metal Athlete." Wow. Well, perhaps after CM Punk defeats Chris Jericho at Extreme Rules in my hometown of Chicago on April 29, Y2J could become so angry that he grabs the WWE Championship from Punk and...smashes it.
"Na Na Na Na. Na Na Na Na. Hey Hey Hey. Goodbye"—to the ugliest WWE Championship belt in history.
The only drawback to having Jericho smash the belt at Extreme Rules is that Chicago would probably cheer Jericho for doing such an awesome deed, which would take away from CM Punk's glorious moment.
Anyway, whether WWE adopts my idea or not, somebody or something must smash that ugly piece of (beep). Then WWE can redesign the WWE Championship to make it look as dignified as its history proves it is.
