Mayweather vs. Cotto: Why Junito Has No Shot at Defeating Pretty Boy

Jesse ReedJun 3, 2018

Floyd "Pretty Boy" Mayweather, Jr. isn't going to lose anytime soon.

Mayweather will fight Miguel "Junito" Cotto on May 5, 2012, putting his undefeated record of 42-0 on the line. Though Cotto is by no means a scrub, he won't come close to defeating the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet.

Here are a few reasons why.

Mayweather's Straight Right Hand

Cotto isn't going to be surprised by the fact that Mayweather will attack using a straight right all night long, but that won't help him stop the barrage. Mayweather has always possessed a strong right hand, but nobody's been able to stop it so far.

He uses it both as a lead and as a counter. It's his bread-and-butter move, and no matter what Cotto tries to do, Mayweather will find a way to land that punch all night long.

Mayweather Is a Defensive Genius

Throughout his career, "Pretty Boy" has maintained his namesake by utilizing flawless technique on the defensive side of things.

He is the most elusive fighter of his generation, and Cotto won't be able to land too many square punches to knock him off-balance.

Mayweather sometimes uses his agility as a weapon, causing opponents to become frustrated at their inability to strike him and then countering with his straight right while they're off-balance.

The old adage, "You can't hit what you can't see" applies in any fight Mayweather is involved in, and Cotto will lose his head more than once after failing to land punches.

Money Can Win Any Kind of Fight

No matter if it's a knockout, TKO or decision, Mayweather can win them all. He can go the distance, and he can knock you out in the first round.

My gut tells me that the upcoming fight against Cotto will end up going to a decision, but you never know what Mayweather will do. Both fighters are technically sound and patient. They both like to wait and see what their opponent will do before charging in.

Mayweather is the master, though, and Cotto will be his pupil in this upcoming fight.
