Auburn Spring Game 2012: Kiehl Frazier Proves Tigers Have Depth at QB

Brian MaziqueMay 31, 2018

Kiehl Frazier's play in the 2012 spring game was encouraging. If nothing else, he proved the Auburn Tigers have solid depth at QB behind Clint Moseley. Frazier was 7-of-9 for 92 yards, and he also rushed for 21 yards.

Moseley played well, even though he was injured, going 5-of-6 for 62 yards. Because he generally has the edge for the top spot coming in, it's unlikely Frazier did enough to replace him as the team's starting QB when the games count.

Still—this represents one of the closest QB competitions in the SEC. The uncertainty is a microcosm of what the Tigers' season figures to be overall.

The offense has a new coordinator in Scott Loeffler, and the program is attempting to rebuild itself to a championship-contending level.

To the QBs' credit, they both seem to have adjusted to the new coordinator well. They were a combined 12-of-15 with no picks. That type of efficiency is still vintage Tigers' football, and it allows for the running game and defense to carry the team.

Frazier is ready to be the type of dual threat the Tigers need at QB to be competitive in the SEC. For the second year in a row, the Tigers don't have a realistic shot at winning the SEC West division.

That said—Tigers coaches and fans know they have two solid options at QB in Moseley and Frazier.

By the time opening week rolls around, head coach Gene Chizik must choose one. As of now, I'd say Frazier may have a slight edge because of the mobility he showed.

The final determination can't be made until Moseley is healthy, but the depth presents a favorable dilemma.
