SEC Football Top 150 Players: No. 143, Randall Mackey, Ole Miss QB

Barrett SalleeJun 7, 2018

Starting April 2, the SEC Blog will be counting down the top 150 players for 2012 in the SEC.

No. 143: Randall Mackey, No. 1, Quarterback, Ole Miss

Strengths

Mackey emerged as Ole Miss' starting quarterback midway through last season, and showed some flashes of brilliance in the process. He led all Rebel passers with 1,112 passing yards and seven touchdown passes, while adding 180 yards and another touchdown on the ground.

He's a true dual-threat quarterback that has proven that he can be an effective quarterback in the SEC.

Weaknesses

Discipline. Mackey was suspended for one game to start the season after an offseason disorderly conduct arrest, and again for the last two games of the season against LSU and Mississippi State for violating team rules.

The arrival of new head coach Hugh Freeze brings a fresh start for Mackey, but Freeze also brings junior college transfer quarterback Bo Wallace with him. There's no guarantee that Mackey will even be the starter in 2012.

2012 Prediction

At this point, the Ole Miss quarterback position is a four-man race. Mackey, Wallace, Barry Brunetti and Zack Stoudt all have their eyes on the prize. Even if Mackey doesn't win the job, he'll likely see the field in some situational roles in Freeze's spread attack—possibly at positions other than quarterback.
