Alabama Spring Game: Eddie Lacy Injury Gives Coaches Chance to See RB Depth

Rob GoldbergApr 6, 2012

Injuries are rarely a good thing, but running back Eddie Lacy being out all spring might be a blessing in disguise for Alabama.

Lacy was ruled out of the entire spring with a turf toe injury, but the good news is that he is one of few players with little to prove.

The junior running back combined for over 1,000 rushing yards in his first two seasons at 7.2 yards per carry.

He is expected to shoulder the load as the main replacement to Heisman finalist Trent Richardson.

However, this run-heavy Crimson Tide offense will need more depth at running back than just Lacy. This is why the spring practices will be so important.

There are a number of players on the roster that have the ability to take that No. 2 spot.

The most experienced of the group is Jalston Fowler. At 6'1", 246 pounds, the junior is a bruiser who excels in short-yardage situations.

Still, the big back was able to average 6.9 yards per carry and scored four touchdowns last season.

Two other talented athletes that could make noise next season are Dee Hart and T.J. Yeldon.

Hart is the former 5-star recruit that redshirted last season, but now he is ready for the prime time.

Yeldon enrolled early for spring to get a head start and have a shot at immediate playing time. According to Rivals.com, he was the No. 2 running back in the nation behind Texas recruit Johnathan Gray.

Each of these young players have elite speed, but Yeldon is bigger and might be the more complete back.

It is unlikely the depth chart will be decided by the end of the spring, but this is a great chance for one of the backs to impress the coaches early on.

Hopefully, they make the most of that opportunity.
