Max Browne to USC: Why the No. 1 QB Spurned Alabama, Oklahoma and Washington

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

National signing day for the 2013 class doesn't take place until next year, but for one player it started a little bit early. His name is Max Browne, and he is rated as the top quarterback prospect from the 2013 class. And for good reason, considering he already has the size (6'5", 185 pounds), throws a very accurate football and makes good decisions with the football.

He seems to be the next top quarterback eventually if he lives up to his potential, and that's why he had offers from nearly every major program in the country. But at the end of the day he could only choose one, and he ended up becoming a USC Trojan.

To me this really comes as no surprise. It seems like the school that fits him the best. But he could have easily picked a different school that was on his list.

Here are a couple of reasons why he likely went to USC over some of the other programs.

Chance to start right away

One of the issues the Trojans have right now at the quarterback position is the fact that they aren't quite sure who will replace Matt Barkley. Sure, there is talent on the roster at quarterback, but it is all unproven talent. That fits perfectly in the hands of Browne, because he'll have the same chance to see the field his freshman season if he beats out the competition as anybody.

USC has always been a school that will play the best player, regardless of how long he's been with the team. This idea had to play a huge part in his decision.

NFL tradition

When you're as good as Browne is, you're already planning your future, and his future is in the next level at the NFL. There aren't too many schools that produce as much NFL talent than USC, and at the quarterback position especially.

Simply in the last few years you've had Mark Sanchez, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart get drafted in the high first round. That doesn't include Barkley, who will likely be the first quarterback taken off the board in the 2013 draft.

“I came to Skyline to continue legacy of great quarterbacks, and do the same at USC,” Browne told Kevin Carden of Scout.com.

When you're the quarterback of the Trojans, there's a pretty good chance you will be drafted and given an opportunity to play in the NFL. Even Matt Cassel was given a chance to start and he was drafted in the seventh round.

It's USC

I mean seriously, if you were a quarterback and had offers from every school in the country, how many schools would you pick above the Trojans? They're the top dog in a weak conference, which just increases his chances of actually winning. They're surrounded by oodles of talent on both sides of the ball, which just makes his job that much easier.

USC isn't too shabby in the classroom last time I checked. And it's still the West Coast, which has to mean something considering he's from Washington.

USC by far has the most benefits, and his decision will likely pay off the second he steps on campus next season.
