Andy Pettitte: 5 Things New York Yankees Fans Would Like to See Him Do in 2012
Before this season, New York Yankees fans thought the only time they'd see Andy Pettitte throw another pitch on a Yankee Stadium mound would be for either the first pitch of a game or Old Timer's Day.
But now that the Yankee legend is returning, 2012 will be another season we as fans get to enjoy one of the greatest pitchers in the team's history one more time.
That being said, here are some things Yankees fans would love to see Pettitte do in 2012.
100th Career Pickoff
1 of 5With 99 pickoffs, Pettitte is one away from the century mark, and passing that historic number will further cement him as the greatest pickoff pitcher in MLB history.
Nothing says vintage Pettitte like a pickoff, and his incredible move has been catching runners napping for 16 seasons now.
It's only a matter of time before he gets another and then some.
250 Career Wins
2 of 5Pettitte (203 wins) won't have enough time to pass the Yankees' all-time wins leader, Whitey Ford (236), but he is sitting on 240 career wins and that puts him in striking distance for 250 career wins.
With the lineup New York is sporting this season, Pettitte should be able to get 10 wins during the 2012 campaign barring he doesn't come up much later than the early May target date for him to be ready.
Even with the 250, Pettitte will likely miss out on the Hall of Fame, but it is a nice round number to have on your baseball card.
Yanks' All-Time Strikeouts Leader
3 of 5This one isn't that big of a stretch, but it's something we as Yankee fans would like Pettitte to accomplish nonetheless.
Pettitte is just 133 strikeouts off the all-time record in pinstripes, which is currently held by Whitey Ford.
Andy has never been known as a strikeout pitcher, but in only 21 starts in 2010, Pettitte struck out 101 batters on the season.
Considering his late start to the year, Pettitte should be slated to make that many starts, and unless his strikeout numbers are at all-time highs, he might need another season to reach this one.
20th Career Postseason Victory
4 of 5Twenty wins in a single season is a milestone that most pitchers will never reach, but in 2012, Pettitte will almost certainly have a chance to reach that win total for his career in the postseason.
No pitcher has ever done that in MLB history.
Pettitte is currently the all-time leader with 19 and the next closest active player is Chris Carpenter with nine. It's safe to say Pettitte can build on a record that has no shot of being broken anytime soon.
Win a World Series
5 of 5It goes without being said that if you play for the Yankees a World Series ring is the only goal.
Pettitte has five with New York and will have a chance to earn his sixth this season. When it comes to sports, six championships is a beautiful number to behold.
With all his postseason experience, Pettitte will be vital to any Yanks' World Series run as he has been in the past.
There would be no more fitting a send-off for Pettitte than if he rode into the sunset as a World Champion once again.
