WWE: Why United States Champion Santino Marella Should Never Win a World Title

Ryan DilbertJun 5, 2018

Newly crowned United States Champion Santino Marella is hot.  His performance at Elimination Chamber 2012 propelled him several rungs up the WWE ladder.

Putting the US title on him is a great idea, but he should never win a world title.

The WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championship should be reserved for a select few.  It should be the highest honor awarded a superstar.

Giving it to a (albeit incredibly popular) comedy wrestler would tarnish it.

Admittedly, there are a few names in the championship record books that shouldn't be there.  Jack Swagger and The Great Khali don't belong on a list filled with legends.

Like allowing Koko B. Ware into the Hall of Fame, those were regrettable decisions that should not be repeated.

If Curt Hennig, Jake Roberts and Roddy Piper weren't allowed to win the big one, what does it say to give it to Santino?

This is why we have secondary titles.

It allows WWE to make full use of Santino's popularity and reward his hard work with the company, all without sacrificing the integrity of the championships.

I'm a fan of his.  He's funny, fresh and possesses an undeniable star power.

But the world titles serve as proof that a wrestler is the best in the world.  Santino in that role is not the least bit convincing.

Having him come ever so close at Elimination Chamber and last year's Royal Rumble was exciting because we were confident that he wouldn't win, but not 100 percent positive.

Had WWE been brazen enough to have him beat Daniel Bryan, fans might have cheered loudly at first, but then an unsettled feeling would pass over us.  It would feel wrong, as if the natural balances of the sport were disturbed.

Not everybody can win a world title.  That's what makes it so special.

Santino is too goofy and too much of an underdog to be a deserving world champ.  He's good where he is.

I'm happy for Santino.  I hope his U.S. title reign is a long one, but let's hope WWE doesn't get carried away with Santino fever and put him in a spot where he doesn't belong.
