2012 NFL Free Agents: Buffalo Bills GM Buddy Nix Sheds Light on Stevie Johnson
While no one seems to be quite sure as to what will happen between the Buffalo Bills and pending free agent wide receiver Stevie Johnson, general manager Buddy Nix provided some insight on the situation today.
He was a guest on WGR sports radio's Howard Simon Show this morning and had the following to say regarding the contract talks with the controversial wideout:
"There's always optimism as long as there's communication going on, and we did have that at the Combine, we've had it since, and we're working. As long as we're talking and both sides are working, we've got a chance. As far as updates or any news, the news you get will be when we do it, or when we don't at the end of the March 13.

Nix also reaffirmed what he told WGR at the NFL Combine. That is, that the franchise tag is still an option for the team in regards to Johnson (via Joe Buscaglia).
While I'm not sold on him as a true No. 1 receiver, there's no questioning his productivity within Chan Gailey's offensive scheme and the rapport he's formulated with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick over the last two seasons.
With that being said, I think the Bills will do whatever they can to bring back Johnson, but only if it allows them to make a play at another mid-level free agent wide receiver.
The team knows they need a deep threat or at least another established receiver to take pressure off Johnson and have said they would like to add a guy during the free agency period.
Since the talks are still ongoing with Johnson, as it stands right now, I'd be stunned if he isn't donning a Bills uniform next season.
Two questions remain; at what cost will the Bills bring back their recognizable receiver and who else will they acquire to bolster their offensive attack?
