Pittsburgh Steelers: Breaking Down OC Todd Haley's Introductory Press Conference

Andrea HangstJun 7, 2018

New Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley had his first official press conference in Pittsburgh today, serving as his introduction to the media and fans.

Haley provided little insight about specific plans for his new offense, which makes sense as he's just been on the job for a few days. He said he has yet to meet with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger or other players at this point, focusing—for the time being—on meeting with members of the coaching staff.

Haley, a Western Pennsylvania native, isn't unfamiliar with the Steelers, and professed his love for the team and his excitement to be part of such a storied franchise a number of times in the press conference.

He also took care to mention more than once that he is not a "system" guy. Haley said there will be some carry over in terminology, especially considering how familiar he's been with it over the years, citing his time with the Arizona Cardinals as one example.

Haley also fielded questions regarding his fiery sideline behavior and his willingness to get in players' faces when displeased with their performance. He made it clear that to be on his team means you're not in a place to be a sensitive person and that football, by nature, is a passionate and emotional game.

Furthermore, he stated that no matter what happens on the sidelines, it's all about the end result. He added that he's been supported by many of his former players over the years, regardless of how often or loudly he's yelled at them.

Haley acknowledged that this time of transition could carry with it some difficulties, saying that there's an "uncomfortable aspect to newness." However, he doesn't anticipate any serious or long-term problems.

He's willing to meet the high expectations the team has been known for over the decades and will focus on what works, rather than trying to mold the team into a pass-heavy or run-heavy game. Again, he's not about a system, but instead adapting to a team's individual strengths.

All in all, Haley appeared pleased to be part of a Steelers organization that has been dear to his heart throughout his entire life. However, the hard work starts now and the end result of the Haley hire is nowhere near to being made clear.
