Best Super Bowl Commercials: Power Ranking Top Advertisements from Big Game
The Super Bowl came and went, but unless you are a Giants fan, the most lasting memories may be from the advertisements.
There were a number of commercials ranging from powerful and striking to just plain stupid.
Keep reading for a power ranking of the top five spots from last night.
No. 5 Chrysler, “It’s Halftime in America”
Chrysler decided to depart from using sex or trying to be funny to push product. They instead enlisted an American icon, Clint Eastwood, to give America a two-minute pep talk during halftime of the Super Bowl.
The Academy Award winning director and nominated actor spoke about how it was halftime in America, and the country is bound to turn itself around.
He spoke about how Detroit will be making a resurgence with the rest of the country and it was quite a powerful and stirring speech. It definitely resonated with viewers and came at a perfect time, in both the game and in the USA’s history.
No. 4 M&M’S, “Just My Shell”
This commercial started slowly, with the weird premise of a man thinking a piece of chocolate candy was naked at a party.
Of course, she revealed her shell was brown and she was not naked, but then the signature red M&M saw her and figured it was “that kind of party” and stripped off his exterior.
The spot ended with the now naked red M&M dancing foolishly next to a peeved brown one. Overall, this was quite funny and well done.
No. 3 Doritos, “Man’s Best Friend”
Doritos has a great thing going for them, allowing fans to create videos and vote on which they will pay to air during the big game.
This has led to some memorable ads during the years, but this may be the best one yet.
A man is shown gardening and catches his dog burying a tag, which happens to be the same one that “Fluffy," a cat on a “missing” sign, had on.
The dog realizes, and slides the man a bag of Doritos in exchange for his silence. The pup holds up another bag when his wife or girlfriend asks if the man has seen the cat.
No. 2 Volkswagen, “The Dog Strikes Back”
This 60-second ad was seemingly broken up into two separate but related pieces. First, we see (yet another) dog that is too fat to chase a VW Beetle. He starts training and eventually works himself into shape.
The next time the Beetle comes by, he is running stride for stride until the camera pulls back to reveal the Mos Eisley Cantina and a bunch of characters from Star Wars discussing the piece.
One of them feels that this is better than last year’s Vader ad when Darth Vader uses the force to start choking him until he apologizes.
This self-referential advertisement was effective and funny.
No. 5 Chevrolet, “Happy Grad”
This was my favorite of the ads that aired during the Super Bowl, even though it has been around for a bit.
This kid goes absolutely nuts when he thinks his parents got him a Camaro, when they actually were trying to show him a mini-fridge they purchased for his graduation.
The absurdity ramps up to incredible levels and includes a marriage proposal and a “Best Gift Ever” chant.
Absolutely hilarious and well done by Chevy.
