Angelo Dundee: Legendary Boxing Trainer Passes Away at 90

A legend of sport, and a god amongst the many rings he trained from, Angelo Dundee has reportedly died at the age of 90. 

ABC News reported Wednesday night that the man who once trained legends like Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard had indeed passed away. 

Dundee was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 30, 1921 and became one of the most sought-after trainers and highly-coveted cornermen in boxing. 

His legacy will always be tied to Ali, but it also included 15 world boxing champions, including Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman and Jimmy Ellis. 

Dundee was one of the rare people to see the transformation of Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali up close and personal. He stayed with the heavyweight champion after his exile from the sport and would later take up training another boxer of note, Sugar Ray Robinson. 

Showing that he had a knack for spotting talent, Dundee would take up with Robinson who he always equated with being a smaller more streamlined version of Ali. 

In one of the more famous tales of his career, he was once accused by George Foreman for loosening the ropes during the 1974 Rumble in the Jungle bout. 

Dundee always denied ever aiding in the rope-a-dope tactic by finagling with the ropes, and would later train an older Foreman during the early 90's. 

The world lost a great teacher that was treasured for his motivation skills as much as he was for his ideas on tactics and strategies. 

Dundee was a marvel in the corner and could bring the absolute best out of some of the biggest giants of the sport. 

The marvelous world of boxing is so much better for Angelo Dundee having touched it.
