Shaq Thompson committed to Cal three weeks ago, but he officially changed his mind late Monday night.

There was no big ceremony. There were no television cameras. Instead, the 5-star recruit announced the news himself on Twitter:

So just like that, the Huskies have scored one of the very best recruits in the country. Let's take a look at exactly what they're getting.

Player Ranking/High School Accomplishments

ESPNU has Thompson ranked as the No. 16 overall recruit in the country, but Rivals.com has him as the No. 4 recruit and Scout.com has him as the No. 3 overall recruit.

Per Scout, Thompson was a first-team All-State Underclass Pick in 2010 at Grant High School in Sacramento, California. His older brother, Syd'Quan, was an All-American corner at Cal.

What Thompson Brings

Thompson is one of the best athletes in the country. He's 6'2" and 210 pounds, and he can turn and run with any receiver. In addition to his physical skills, Thompson boasts great instincts. He'll fit any scheme and could play cornerback or safety if need be.

Why Thompson and Washington Are a Good Fit

Did you see Washington's defense in 2011? It was awful, particularly against the pass. The Huskies allowed 283.8 passing yards per game in 2011—116th in the country. Thompson has the goods to start right away, and the Huskies are going to need him to.

Projected 2012 Impact

Thompson will play right away, but Washington will have to figure out where to play him. Don't be surprised if he gets some work at corner and safety in 2012.
