WWE Raw Results: Top 15 Moments from Last Night's Supershow
WWE put on an entertaining show last night. The Red Brand has had a few nice shows as of late, and I applaud the company. Smackdown will have a tough battle this week to earn the "best show of the week" award.
If I had to give Raw a grade, it would be in the B range. Nothing was spectacular, while very little was bad. It was just a very good show just days before the Royal Rumble event. Here are my top moments!
15. Faith in the Funk
1 of 15I just wanted to mention this right off the bat.
For those that watch the USA Network, WWE airs a little "teaser" preview of Raw about 10 minutes before the start time. It usually builds up the main event or even a major announcement.
What did WWE promote this week?
Chris Jericho on the Highlight Reel and Brodus Clay "in da' house!"
Hyping up Jericho is not a surprise. He is a major player in the business and a future WWE Hall of Famer. Brodus Clay getting some attention was very nice to see. It shows a lot of faith in his new character, and all of his fans (like me!) should be happy with that.
14. No Divas Match
2 of 15I don't care if it is Alicia Fox. I don't care if it is Rosa Mendes. I don't care if it is Kelly Kelly. I don't care if it is Beth Phoenix. I don't even care if it is Mae Young!
There needs to be a divas match on every WWE show. That should just go without saying. Hopefully, Smackdown makes up for it this week.
13. Mick Foley Cameo
3 of 15Well, Mick Foley was backstage. He appeared for about 10 seconds. That was a nice follow-up from last week, huh? I would have rather he stayed off camera.
Yes, he got his Rumble spot later on in the night. Yes, he may play a bigger role in the days to come. Yes, I will wait and see until Sunday. However, I still did not like him being such a non-factor last night.
12. Miz vs. R-Truth
4 of 15Wow! This feud went nowhere quick.
I liked R-Truth's new shirt. I liked their backstage promo. I liked the fact that Miz lost again. I also liked the match stipulation. Miz should be great at being the No. 1 entrant in Sunday's Rumble.
However, I did not like how this was set up. All in all, their feud is over. I suppose it could continue with them being in the Chamber match next month. It may even drag out another month. The way I see it, they are done with each other.
11. Commentary Booth
5 of 15Watch that video! Great commentary by Michael Cole...
I noticed this last week on Smackdown. I noticed it again last night. The commentary team seems to be doing a nice job again. Often times, they get off track. Cole can go off the rails some shows, while Jerry Lawler can sound bored during some matches.
Booker T is always ridiculous. Josh Matthews is always just "there."
However, I liked the commentary last night. They stayed on topic, and it was never distracting. Job well done, WWE!
10 Sheamus vs. Jinder Mahal
6 of 15Sheamus is going to be a star. That is just made more and more clear each week.
He defeated Jinder Mahal in a short match. We have seen it a few times already, but I still enjoyed it. Sheamus just needs to keep winning.
Wade Barrett had a nice appearance as well. He did not do much, but he made his intentions apparent. He wants to win the Royal Rumble, as does Sheamus and a ton of other wrestlers. Nice shine for the Blue Brand here!
9. Opening Promo
7 of 15CM Punk dabbled into the "breaking the fourth wall," but thankfully, he stuck on topic most of the time. I loved his focus on the Rumble. Repeatedly mentioning "this Sunday," "at the Royal Rumble," or "my opponent in the WWE title match" may seem like a small thing, but it needs to be said.
Fans need to know the pay-per-view event is only days away. Punk did a great job there. John Cena coming out was unexpected, but I enjoyed it. The two teased some tension, but both were still faces here.
Of course, Johnny Ace quickly interrupted them and set up the opening tag-team match...
8. Great Tag Match
8 of 15Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger defeated John Cena and CM Punk. It was a very nice way to begin the show. All four men are former World Champions, and the ending was very interesting.
Quick note: Vickie Guerrero looked amazing once again!
Johnny Ace distracted CM Punk just enough for Dolph Ziggler to roll him up for the victory. I am not sure if I like the WWE Champion losing so much, but I can't judge it until this Sunday night.
If Punk loses on Sunday, it is a problem. If Punk retains, I am fine with it.
7. Brodus Clay Is Epic
9 of 15I don't think the Phoenix crowd liked Brodus Clay. That is fine. Winning people over one week by week is half the fun. Think of Mark Henry last year. The backlash against his run on Smackdown was so huge last summer, only to slowly fade away once people realized his greatness.
The same will happen with Clay. I can relate to him. The man can dance, as can I. The man had great hair, as do I. The man also wins a lot, as do I.
His opponent last night was Heath Slater. I don't know about you folks, but I could watch him be destroyed on WWE TV every single segment. Great night for Cameron and Naomi as well!
6. Rumble Hype
10 of 15The Royal Rumble is this Sunday!
WWE made a great effort in pushing the event as "must see." I know I will purchase the event. You know, not illegally watching it online.
I love the video packages each year on the "numbers" of the Rumble. Every year is the same with a few minor changes, and it is entertaining each time. Very excited for the show Sunday!
Then it is off to the WWE Elimination Chamber PPV, where I will be there live.
5. Smackdown Preview
11 of 15WWE is advertising Randy Orton to return this Friday night on Smackdown. I would have gone with him being a surprise entrant and winning on Sunday. However, it looks like that will not be in the cards.
Also, the announcers seemed to hint that Big Show will finally comment on his incident with AJ 11 days ago. It should be a very eventful Smackdown just days before the Rumble!
4. John Cena and Kane
12 of 15I am looking forward to their match Sunday night. John Cena and Kane have had matches in the past, but I think this is their biggest one to date.
It has been a very well-done feud.
Kane is the clear-cut heel. John Cena is the clear-cut face. The good guy wants to get revenge on the bad guy and will do so on PPV. It is that easy...
Once again, I am sure one million "Cena heel turn" theories will come up. That is fine. Everybody has his own opinion. I know the phrase is "never say never," but you will never see me predict Cena turning heel. Never have in the past six years. Never will in the future.
I won't reveal my prediction until the weekend. However, the result should be a clean win for Cena. No other outcome is acceptable.
3. Closing Segment
13 of 15I never believed CM Punk vs. Johnny Ace was going to take place. I doubt many others really thought it would take place either. Here are a few bullet points on the final segment of Raw:
1. Punk already had a match earlier in the night. If he had done another match (not counting his beat down of David Otunga here), I would be discussing this issue. Once again: Nobody should wrestle twice in one night.
2. They teased a one-on-one match in the near future. The Elimination Chamber event seems like a perfect place to me. It would be great to see that in person. Look for the eventual match between these two. It just wasn't going to happen last night.
3. Triple H returns next week to evaluate Johnny Ace's job performance. That is interesting. Does somebody get fired? Is there a permanent Raw general manager-in-waiting? How will this alter Sunday's WWE title match? Will Undertaker interrupt Triple H, like he did to do him (in reverse) last year?
4. I did not like CM Punk hitting the GTS on Big Johnny! That moment had to be held off for another month or so. I liked that Dolph Ziggler stood tall to close the show, but he has been all but ignored in this feud. Perhaps that will play into his favor at the Rumble?
A lot of questions need to be answered here. By next Monday night, the picture will be clear.
2. Rough Night for Zack Ryder
14 of 15Kane destroyed Zack Ryder in their match. It was never even a contest. Yes, you can blame it on the injury to Zack. Go ahead. Just like John Morrison had the infamous "neck excuse" all summer...
It doesn't matter.
Ryder was choke-slammed through the stage and was carried out of the arena on a stretcher. Not a good time get suffer a "broken back!" Royal Rumble time...Elimination Chamber after that...Wrestle Mania...
It will be interesting to see if the match was ever called off. The rule was if Cena interfered Ryder would never get another United States Title match. Well, Cena did come out, but it was after the destruction.
There was no winner. No final bell. Maybe Ryder will get another title re-match? Maybe not?
Anyway, Eve blaming Cena for all of this was very intriguing. I do not know about you, but Eve and Ryder turning heel just became a possibility in my book. No way I am predicting Cena to turn! That is not going to happen.
Ryder snapping on Cena, though? Hey, that would certainly be the character change I have been begging for the "broski" to undergo the past few months! I just can't see him returning from this as the same "goofy" wrestler. Please let this be a "serious" turning point in his career.
1. Chris Jericho
15 of 15Chris Jericho is officially entered into the Royal Rumble match!
Last night, his Highlight Reel segment was excellent. It really was. Notice the only "highlights" he showed were of himself over the years? Yeah, that was a very "heel-ish" move! Subtle yet great.
His cryptic "first words" were perfect. The intrigue added to this Sunday just went up—big time! Jericho has been brilliant since returning, and I expect the same in St. Louis in five days.
I am not big on "fantasy booking," but I recently came across this theory! Give it a read here.
Basically, it reads that Chris Jericho would win the Rumble without ever doing a thing. Every man would be eliminated with only the No. 30 entrant remaining. The countdown clocks hits zero, the arena goes dark, as Jericho's jacket lights up!
The crowd loudly boos, as they know what is about to happen.
Jericho turns around, smirks, starts to run around the ring clapping hands with everybody before jumping in the ring. The bell rings, as nobody is left to enter! Jericho wins the Rumble and celebrates as if he had done so in amazing fashion!
His "victory" speech the following night on Raw would be amazing.
