Sacramento Kings: Jimmer Fredette Needs to Start, Tyreke Evans Not a Point Guard

Jesse ReedDec 29, 2011

Jimmer Fredette and Tyreke Evans need to be playing together in the starting lineup for the Sacramento Kings. Evans is clearly struggling as a point guard three years into his young career, and the Kings need to realize he's not a point guard; he's a slashing shooting guard.

Only two games into the 2011 NBA season, and the Sacramento Kings are already running into trouble with turnovers (11 and 18 in their first two games) and ball movement on offense.

Paul Westphal needs to set up two rotations on offense.

The first-team offense would be Fredette at point guard with Evans as the shooting guard. Jimmer gives the Kings a dead-aim shooter on the outside while allowing Evans to run around his defender ragged, using picks and screens to utilize his speed and size against opposing shooting guards.

All the running will also tire out the shooting guard on the opposite side, giving the Kings a better chance on the defensive side of the ball.

The second-team offense would obviously be Isaiah Thomas as the point guard with Marcus Thornton as the shooting guard. This allows Thomas to be the field general, while Thornton works on the mid-range game that he excels at.

I know many of you might not agree with me about putting Thornton on the bench, but you must realize that setting the rotation up this way would give the Kings one of the best guard units in the NBA.

Factor in John Salmons' veteran presence and all-around strong play and the emergence of DeMarcus Cousins, and you have a recipe for long-term success.

I know that making a change like this would take a bit of time to develop, but nobody expects the Kings to be a major factor this year anyway.

Take the ball out of Evans' hands, and teach the rookie how to run a Westphal offense. This is the best solution for long-term success in Sacramento.
