1st day of camp for the Raiders did not go as expected, it went fabulous for a Raider fan. One thing that stood out right away is Tom Cable is the head man. He knows what is going on and will tell everyone what is happening. Cable could be our version of Rex Ryan.
The next thing that stood out is production from our "busts". JaMarcus Russell (who is not 300 freaking pounds, he look 270), Darrius Heyward-Bey, and Darren McFadden all looked great at camp. Russell threw absolute bombs to people, but we already knew he could do that. He limited his mistakes, only missing a couple throws. He also had that "attitude". He was a leader, and he was joking around with Mr.Campbell. Darrius Heyward-Bey had only three drops today. He had 3 drops in 3 balls last year on the first day of camps. He either went to Walgreens and bought himself some super glue, or he practiced. Considering he works hard, I'll go with practice. Darren McFadden was the definition of solid today. You would have barely noticed he and Mike Bush were there.
Another few points about our rooks that we have. Rolando McClain was ready to go hit people in #55 because he said he, "got the playbook the day after he was drafted." That was great news to here we have a big bad linebacker ready to go. Another thing was Lamarr Houston looked solid, getting more reps at DE as Seymour was absent from camp (contract issues). Our third rounder Veldheer had to come ready to learn and he did, almost stalking Khalif Barnes all day. Bruce Campbell had the most interesting work of the day for a rookie. He is moving to RG, officially. I'm a little bummed because I would like him at RT in a year or so, so I hope he can learn to play tackle too. Campbell looks like a guard ready to shove over those big NTs in our division. One last rookie note goes to undrafted Manase Tonga of BYU. Oren O'Neal was cut today, making Tonga and Reece the only two fullbacks in attendance. I expect Tonga to start from Day 1 considering how terrible FB was last year.
So, Day 1 looked good. Also, another couple guys at Raider Camp or around the area. John Henderson and Chris Hovan (DTs) were both watching closely either on TV on NFL Network or in person. Michael Bennett was physically trying out, and I'm sure TO checked in on the camp via his advisors or whatever. Raider Nation, Day 1 looked good, and we may have a revived Russell, sticky-hand DHB, and a new DT on the way.
