Jets Will Meet Barack Obama "in the Next Couple of Years Anyway"

Colin LinneweberJan 21, 2010

The improbable New York Jets will play the dominant Indianapolis Colts Sunday in the AFC Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indiana.

To get to this point, the Jets (11-7) defeated the Chargers 17-14 in San Diego, and the Colts (15-2) trumped the Baltimore Ravens 20-3 at home in their respective Divisional Round matchups.

The Jets stand one victory away from making their first appearance in the Super Bowl since 1969.

2025 Draft Picks Ready For Leap 🐸

In their last championship season 41 years ago, the Jets were considered colossal underdogs in Super Bowl III vs. the Baltimore Colts.

Prior to the epic contest, brash Jets quarterback Joe Willie Namath boldly proclaimed, ā€œWe’re gonna win this game. I guarantee you.ā€

In one of the greatest upsets in football history, the Jets emerged victorious 16-7 to validate Namath’s proclamation.

From the virtual instant the Colts selected quarterback Peyton Manning out of the University of Tennessee with the first overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft, Indianapolis has fielded a solid football team.

In the past decade, despite winning only one crown, the Colts were an utter juggernaut on the gridiron.

On the contrary, the Jets have mainly fielded a litany of average and subpar squads during the past 20 years of their wretched existence.

The Colts have developed into something of football royalty.

In sharp contrast, the Jets have long been the NFL’s version of red-headed, bastard children.

Indianapolis is a finesse team whose offensive play designs are aesthetically pleasing for fans to watch.

Gang Green relies on a punishing running game and a ferocious and scheming defense to prevail.

Essentially, the Jets and the Colts could not possibly be more opposite franchises.

However, the Jets have a legitimate chance this weekend to remodel themselves and assume the unique identity of a respected and thriving organization.

Manning, 33, a four-time NFL MVP and five-time All-Pro selection, is justifiably considered one of the greatest signal-callers in the annals of the sport.

Nevertheless, in the playoffs, Manning has led the Colts to a mediocre record of 8-8, and he has uncharacteristically thrown 18 interceptions in those 16 games.

ā€œI’ve seen him get rattled against the Patriots when the Patriots and the Colts were in the playoffs,ā€ said Jets 2006 All-Pro safety Kerry Rhodes.

ā€œI’ve seen it happen a couple of times. When they played Pittsburgh in the playoffs (’05 season). Pittsburgh came up with all kinds of blitzes, zone blitzes. He’s seen everything. But the way you disguise it is key. Even when he is not pressured, make him feel simulated pressure. Anybody can get rattled.ā€

The Jets statistically own the best defense in the league, and they have proven that they are a very dominant and ferocious unit on that side of the ball.

Critics carp on the notion that the Colts enabled the Jets to eke into the postseason when they prematurely yanked Manning from a 29-15 loss against them in Week 16.

When Manning was controversially substituted for the illustrious Curtis Painter, the Colts were narrowly leading the Jets 15-10 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

It is ridiculous that many analysts presume that the Colts would have won if Manning continued to play.

In actuality, the Jets indisputably had every bit the opportunity to win that late-season contest as the Colts did.

Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan gained much of his football knowledge from his father, legendary defensive whiz Buddy.

Buddy Ryan has watched the Jets extensively this season, and he is confident that his son’s squad can punish and ultimately thwart the Colts' dynamic passing game.

ā€œI’ve watched the offensive and defensive line, and when you win, you have to have a great offensive and defensive line,ā€ said the elder Ryan, who created the renowned 46 defense when he was the Chicago Bears defensive coordinator. ā€œThey’ve got that here.ā€

Buddy also mentioned the trouble that Rex has historically had defending Manning and the Colts.

ā€œI’ve wanted to see him win this game, him against the Colts, since he was in Baltimore (as the Ravens defensive coordinator). It’ll be a close game. But they can do it.ā€

There is zero question that the Jets ā€œcan do it.ā€

However, if Gang Green can’t overcome the Colts, the future is absolutely gleaming for the Jets.

The Jets are the youngest team in the league, and they have the most formidable offensive and defensive lines in football.

Ryan, 47, has proven as a rookie coach that he is an outstanding leader of men who will likely be roaming the sidelines in the swamps of Jersey for quite some time.

Quarterback Mark Sanchez, 23, the fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft, has had a tumultuous and erratic rookie campaign under center.

Nevertheless, Sanchez has vast potential, and fans should be confident that he will prosper into an exceptional signal-caller in due time.

Running back Shonn Greene, 24, whom the Jets chose in the third round in April, will only continue to progress.

First time All-Pro selection Darrelle Revis, 24, barring injury or illness, will remain the top cornerback in the league for most of this decade.

When Ryan was hired to coach the Jets last October, he stated that the Jets would win the championship soon, and that would allow him to meet President Barack Obama at the White House.

ā€œFirst off, with all the cameras, I was looking for our new president (Barack Obama) back there,ā€ said Ryan. ā€œI think we’ll get to meet him in the next couple of years anyway.ā€

The Jets are playing at a blistering pace, and they could stun naysayers and capture the Lombardi Trophy at Super Bowl XLIV Feb. 7.

If they don’t, fans of Gang Green can expect their team to meet the president ā€œin the next couple of years anyway.ā€
