Raptors Trade DeMarre Carroll, Draft Picks to Nets for Justin Hamilton

The Toronto Raptors announced they have traded wing DeMarre Carroll and draft picks to the Brooklyn Nets for center Justin Hamilton on Thursday.

Brooklyn is getting a future first- and second-round pick in the deal, both of which are 2018 selections.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the news on July 8. According to Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today, the first-round pick is lottery protected.

The 30-year-old Carroll spent the past two seasons with the Raptors after coming into his own as a member of the Atlanta Hawks.

His production dropped in Toronto, however, especially in 2016-17, when he shot just 40 percent from the field and averaged 8.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.0 assists per game.

The trade was primarily a salary dump since the Raptors spent big money this offseason after reaching agreements to retain guard Kyle Lowry and forward Serge Ibaka.

Per Spotrac, Carroll has two years and just over $30 million remaining on his contract.

Wojnarowski pointed out that the deal makes sense from Brooklyn's perspective:

The Nets are in rebuild mode and don't figure to contend for the playoffs in the near future, which allows them to take on extra salary.

Also, Brooklyn landed a pair of draft picks that will essentially act as lottery tickets, making the deal worthwhile.

The Nets did lose a somewhat useful big in the deal, as the 27-year-old Hamilton is a former second-round pick who averaged 6.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game last season.

Hamilton's arrival will give the Raptors depth in the frontcourt behind Ibaka and Jonas Valanciunas.
