Tom Coughlin Comments on Odell Beckham Jr.'s in-Game Behavior
Former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is less than a year removed from departing Big Blue, and he didn't shy away from addressing wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.'s recent antics when asked about them Tuesday.
On CBS Sports Network'sĀ We Need to Talk, Coughlin warned that his former player needs to get his emotions in check to get back on track:
In a transcript of the interview provided by Ryan Wilson of CBSSports.com, Coughlin praised Beckham but offered some advice and made it clear he would be happy to help if needed:
"He really believes that he is at his best at the top of his passion. He is so talented. I don't think there's anything the kid can't do. He is a good kid. He is a team guy in the team room. It's just when he gets on the field, there's only one way he knows how to play.
For his own good [he needs to learn to channel his passion]. And I would love to try to help him in this regard because I think so highly of him. ... [But] he is a distraction. If you watch a game the camera is on him the whole time.
"
When asked about Coughlin's comments, current Giants head coach Ben McAdoo said, "I have no feeling one way or the other," per James Kratch of NJ Advance Media.Ā
One week after throwing a tantrum on the sidelines during a loss to the Washington Redskins, Beckham was penalized for taunting in New York's Week 4 defeat against the Minnesota Vikings.
Frustration has seemingly started to mount for the two-time Pro Bowler, as he has just 22 receptions for 303 yards and no touchdowns after reeling in a total of 25 touchdowns in his first two NFL seasons.
According to ESPN.com, OBJ told ESPN's Anita Marks that the past couple of weeks have adversely impacted his enjoyment of the game:Ā "Football is my sanctuary. It's where I go to escape. It's where I'm most happy. I'm not having fun anymore."
While Beckham is under the jurisdiction of McAdoo, Coughlin's offer to lend a helping hand may be worth considering.
Coughlin is a two-time Super Bowl winner and potential future Hall of Famer. He was also at the helm when Beckham broke into the league and turned in two elite-level seasons.
Beckham is one of the best pass-catchers in the NFL when he is on his game, but as long as he continues to allow the opposition to get under his skin, it will be difficult for him to return to his previous level of play.
