Brock Osweiler Reportedly to Sign with Houston Texans

Mike ChiariFeb 7, 2016

Brock Osweiler flashed the potential necessary to become the Denver Broncos' quarterback of the future in 2015, but the 25-year-old won't be the man under center to replace Peyton Manning after reportedly agreeing to join the Houston Texans.

Rand Getlin of NFL.com and Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Osweiler's decision to leave the Mile High City.

The Broncos made a last-minute push to keep Osweiler, with Mike Klis of 9News reporting the Broncos and Jimmy Sexton, Osweiler's agent, had resumed discussions and added there would be "serious negotiations."

After sitting behind Manning for three seasons and only getting a chance to attempt 30 passes during that time, Osweiler got an opportunity to shine in 2015.

With Manning on the shelf due to a foot injury, Osweiler appeared in eight games, starting seven of them, and posted a record of 5-2. He completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 1,967 yards, 10 touchdowns, six interceptions and a rushing score.

The former Arizona State standout seemed poised to enter the playoffs as Denver's starter, but he was pulled from the team's Week 17 game against the San Diego Chargers. Manning led the team to a victory and a crucial first-round playoff bye before ultimately winning Super Bowl 50.

Per NFL.com's Marc Sessler, Osweiler took the demotion well and hadn't been a distraction whatsoever:

Even so, Osweiler admitted to Klis that getting dropped down the depth chart wasn't easy for him:

"

If I said it was easy these two games to sit back and watch, I'd completely be lying. So it is difficult to sit back and watch. As a competitor you want to be out there in the fire with your teammates. You want to be in the huddle. You want to have your hand on the ball every single play. The bottom line is coach [Gary] Kubiak is doing what he believes is best for the football team and I fully support that and I support the team 100 percent.

"

Now, Osweiler will be the man under center for a Texans team that struggled to find a consistent option all season long. Since Osweiler has already spent four seasons developing, he was a more attractive option than a rookie draft pick for head coach Bill O'Brien.
