Anthony Bennett Waived by Timberwolves: Details, Comments, Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldSep 23, 2015

Former No. 1 overall NBA draft pick Anthony Bennett is leaving a second team in as many years as a pro. The Minnesota Timberwolves announced they have waived the former No. 1 overall pick on Wednesday, via NBA.com.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports initially reported on a buyout between Bennett and the Timberwolves on September 22.

Instead of a buyout, the Timberwolves took a different route to free up roster space and look toward the future. Minnesota general manager Milt Newton said in a statement released in the NBA.com report that this move gives both sides an opportunity to move forward:

"

In speaking with Anthony and his representatives over the past few days, we came to the conclusion that this was the best outcome for both parties. When you look at our team, our deepest position is probably power forward. This move balances out our roster while also allowing Anthony another opportunity in the NBA. He has a lot of talent and his play this summer internationally made this a difficult decision for us.

"

Bennett was the first pick in the 2013 draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers but endured a disastrous rookie campaign. That led Cleveland to deal him to Minnesota as part of the swap to land Love.

It's rather telling that the young Timberwolves didn't deem Bennett worthy enough to stick around, despite having an ideal mentor in Kevin Garnett to confer with, though ESPN Stats and Info highlighted how bad the former UNLV star has been in his NBA career:

Basketball Insiders' Alex Kennedy weighed in on Bennett's situation:

There is reason for teams still to invest in Bennett's potential, especially now that he can be had at a bargain. Bennett showed signs of improvement and had a stellar summer with the Canadian national team in leading the squad to a silver medal at the 2015 Pan American Games.

Still just 22 years old, Bennett has plenty of time to prove the rocky start to his career isn't an indication of what's to come. As it stands, though, it will take a strong organization and a gradual progression for Bennett to emerge as a viable role player or starter in the Association.
