Moves the Kansas City Chiefs Will Regret Not Making This Offseason

Farzin VousoughianApr 7, 2015

The Kansas City Chiefs have had a great offseason so far and the national media will be the first to concur.

NFL.com released an offseason power ranking last month as the Chiefs placed ninth, one spot behind an AFC West rival in the Denver Broncos.

Kansas City's notable offseason additions include wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, guards Paul Fanaika and Ben Grubbs, safety Tyvon Branch and quarterback Terrelle Pryor. The team also managed to re-sign wide receiver Jason Avant, tight end Richard Gordon and defensive backs Kelcie McCray and Ron Parker.

While the team's offseason has been great, it could have been better as the Chiefs have a couple of holes that still need to be addressed.

In this slideshow, we look at some of the moves the Chiefs should have made, or can still make, and why those moves would better the team.

Releasing Quarterback Chase Daniel

1 of 4

Backup quarterback Chase Daniel has done his job in the two times he has been asked to fill in, both coming in during a crucial Week 17 match in which the Chargers, on both occasions, needed to win in order to make the playoffs. Though the Chiefs went 1-1 with Daniel under center, he did what he was asked to do to put the team in position to win.

Daniel, however, has a cap number of $4.8 million for the 2014 season, according to Over The Cap. If Daniel was cut, the Chiefs would create $3.8 million of cap space. The NFLPA's most recent public salary cap report has the Chiefs currently sitting a little more than $2.81 million underneath.

The Chiefs still have a couple of needs they must address, which we will dive into in a moment. In order for the Chiefs to be able to tackle those holes, they must release Daniel and do it soon while a couple of good free agents are still available.

Though Daniel is a good quarterback, the Chiefs will be fine with the quarterbacks behind Alex Smith. Pryor should do better in a system more suited to him and Aaron Murray has a lot of upside and can show it off if given the opportunity.

Adding a No. 2 Wide Receiver

Going into the 2015 offseason, there were plenty of notable wide receivers and it was no secret the Chiefs needed help at that spot. As Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas and Randall Cobb were either franchised or re-signed, Jeremy Maclin became the best available wide receiver and was picked up by the Chiefs.

While the No. 1 wide receiver spot has been solved, every NFL offense needs a solid No. 2 receiver.

Andre Johnson, Cecil Shorts, Brian Hartline and Kenny Britt are all good fits as a No. 2 wide receiver, but they have all signed with another team. At the moment, Michael Crabtree, Hakeem Nicks and Greg Jennings are available and likely to accept a role where they serve as a wide receiver opposite of Maclin.

Unless the Chiefs have their eye on a rookie receiver in the first round of the NFL draft later this month, a veteran wide receiver to help improve the team's receiving corps would be wise.

Signing Center Stefen Wisniewski

3 of 4

Although center Rodney Hudson was lost and signed with the Oakland Raiders, the Chiefs have had an opportunity to snag the man who Hudson is replacing.

Stefen Wisniewski and Hudson are the only two notable centers who hit free agency this year. Though the Chiefs have not signed Wisniewski, it is not too late either. But there may be a reason why Wisniewski is still available.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago TribuneWisniewski has gone unsigned because he is currently recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. He played with a torn Labrum during the 2014 season.

Biggs reports that the Chiefs are one of several teams interested in Wisniewski, and he also suggests that Wisniewski's requesting $4 million per season.

The severity of his shoulder is unknown, but it could be safe to assume that Wisniewski would take a step back, performance wise, if he has yet to be picked up.

According to Pro Football Focus, Wisniewski allowed just one sack last year. If he can play at the same level with the Chiefs, the team would have three new linemen, including Grubbs and Fanaika, that allowed only one sack individually last season.

Overview

4 of 4

The Chiefs don't have a lot of holes on the team.

Releasing Daniel is a must and it is a surprise that it hasn't happened yet.

As for the wide receiver and center positions, if the Chiefs want to forego bringing a veteran No. 2 receiver or a center, then they might be keeping an eye on a couple of players in the draft.

In terms of wide receivers, Dorial-Green Beckham, Jaelen Strong and maybe DeVante Parker will be available when the Chiefs are on the clock at No. 18.

As for centers, Florida State's Cameron Erving might be the only offensive lineman who is both built to play center and can start right away at that spot in the NFL. While there are other talented interior linemen, some might take a while before they develop into a primary center.

General manager John Dorsey has some options. If he wants to pass on some free agents, he can always use his 10 draft picks to address the team's needs early on as he owns four draft picks in the top 100 slots. After the draft is over, the Chiefs should have a complete roster going into OTAs and training camp poised for a successful 2015 season.
