Chicago Bears vs. New York Jets: What Are Experts Saying About New York?

Aidan MackieSep 18, 2014

The New York Jets are coming off a heartbreaking loss against the Green Bay Packers, but the team doesn't have the time to contemplate what could have been, as the Chicago Bears are coming to town this week for a prime-time matchup.

The Bears are coming off a stunning victory over the San Francisco 49ers, so the two teams could not be feeling any different right now.

However, both are 1-1, and both have their eyes on a playoff berth.

Chicago possesses an explosive offense that includes Matt Forte, Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, but its defense is a huge question mark.

The Jets, on the other hand, often struggle to put up points on the board, but their defense, especially the front seven, is capable of containing elite offenses.

This game is huge for both clubs' playoff hopes, and it's sure to be one of the more entertaining games of the week.

Click through to see what the experts are saying about the Jets prior to their critical Monday Night Football matchup with the Bears.

Eric Decker and Dee Milliner Still Might Play on Monday Night

1 of 5

Eric Decker and Dee Milliner are two of the more important players on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, respectively.

Decker is one of the team's only consistent receiving threats, and he's built a nice rapport with Geno Smith through two games.

Unfortunately, against the Packers on Sunday, the first-year Jet reaggravated a hamstring injury that bothered him throughout the preseason.

As for Milliner, he's been dealing with a high-ankle sprain throughout the last month. He played against the Packers, but he obviously wasn't 100 percent. He struggled considerably, allowing several big plays to Jordy Nelson

Despite the injuries, both Decker and Milliner are "on pace to play" in Monday Night's contest, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York.

Both players and New York's coaching staff are optimistic that the two will play, even if they don't practice fully throughout the week.

Having Decker and Milliner on the field, even if they aren't completely healthy, would be a huge boost for the Jets.

The Jets Secondary Needs to Step Up

2 of 5

After a decent showing in Week 1, the Jets secondary was absolutely destroyed by Aaron Rodgers and Jordy Nelson last week.

After a slow start, Rodgers tossed for 346 yards and three touchdowns. Nelson, meanwhile, racked up a career-high 209 yards and a score.

The competition won't get any easier this week for New York's suspect back end, as one of the league's best passing offenses comes to town.

The Bears possess two of the biggest and most dangerous receivers in the game in Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, as well as a solid tight end in Martellus Bennett and a top-notch pass-catching back in Matt Forte.

Cornerbacks Antonio Allen, Dee Milliner and Darrin Walls need to be better for the Jets to squeak out a victory on Monday.

Allen has the physical tools to contain Chicago's fearsome wideouts, but he has to put it all together to be successful, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Milliner and Walls might have a tough time handling the huge receivers, but they have to find a way to use their speed and agility to their advantage.

New York's Backfield Duo Should Be in for a Good Game

3 of 5

The Jets rolled over the Oakland Raiders in Week 1 to a tune of 212 rushing yards.

The running game failed to build on that success last game, though, as the Packers focused on slowing down the run, limiting Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory to just 64 combined yards.

However, the backfield duo should be in for a quick turnaround.

The Bears possess one of the worst run defenses in the NFL, even after bringing in the likes of LaMarr Houston and Willie Young in the offseason.

Chicago has allowed an average of 160 rushing yards through the first two games, which ranks among the bottom in the league.

Tyson Rauch of CBS New York said earlier this week that the Jets have to establish a strong running game to control the pace of the contest and keep the Bears' high-flying offense off the field, and I couldn't agree more.

Ivory and Johnson are capable of taking over the game on Monday Night, as long as the offensive line improves upon its performance from a week ago and Geno Smith makes some plays early so the Bears don't stack the box.

Gang Green's Defensive Front Could Make Chicago One-Dimensional on Offense

4 of 5

It's well-known by now that the Jets possess perhaps the league's most dominant defensive fronts.

They allowed just 3.4 yards per carry in 2013, and they've been even better through two games this year, ranking first in the league in rushing yards allowed.

The Bears boast one of the game's best running backs in Matt Forte, but the team really struggled to establish the run last week against the 49ers.

Forte totaled only 21 yards on 12 carries, and the team managed only 46 rushing yards in all.

Bears guard Kyle Long was "embarrassed" by the team's effort in the run game, according to Mark Potash of the Chicago Sun-Times.

The 49ers' run defense pales in comparison to that of the Jets, so chances are Chicago is in for another tough game running the football.

Matt Forte may be in line for his second straight subpar game, and the Bears my have to rely upon Jay Cutler and the passing game once again to snatch the road victory.

There's No Clear Favorite in This One

5 of 5

It's hard to get a grasp on the NFL this early in the season, specifically teams like the Jets and the Bears.

Both squads have been terrific and then awful on both a play-to-play and game-to-game basis.

Maybe that's why experts can't agree on who will emerge victorious at MetLife Stadium on Monday Night.

While the majority of ESPN and Bleacher Report experts think Chicago will get the victory, the guys over at CBS Sports and NFL.com lean more toward the Jets.

Regardless of which team wins, the game is sure to be an entertaining one.

The Bears' strengths are some of the Jets' biggest weaknesses, and vice versa. Whichever team can better expose their opponent's flaws should emerge as the victor.
