NFL Free Agent Rumors: Where Will Mario Williams Land?

Ryan PhillipsMar 5, 2012

Houston Texans outside linebacker/defensive end Mario Williams appears set to hit free agency next Tuesday, as the team has yet to engage him in contract talks. The Texans also won't use the franchise tag on Williams, since it would carry a ridiculous price of $22.9 million.

The two-time Pro Bowler is certain to be one of the most sought-after players on the NFL's open market this offseason. The Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots have both been mentioned as potential suitors for his services, while speculation has also placed the Buffalo Bills in contention for the N.C. State product.

The Patriots seem like a logical fit, seeing as how Williams is a versatile pass rusher who could play on the outside of head coach Bill Belichick's 4-3/3-4 hybrid scheme. New England needs a few difference-makers on the defensive side of the ball, as the team had one of the NFL's worst defenses throughout the 2011 season.

The Texans could still work something out with Williams, but it's unlikely. Without the former No. 1 overall pick—who missed most of the season with a torn pectoral muscle—Houston boasted the NFL's second-ranked defense, a unit that allowed just 285.7 yards per game. And that was in defensive coordinator Wade Phillips' first year with the team. Things should only improve with another year of familiarity in his 3-4 scheme.

As things stand right now the Patriots have to be thought of as the leaders for Williams. While Belichick has often eschewed big-name free agents, he knows as well as anyone that the aging Patriots only have a few years left to contend. Adding a guy like Williams to the team could change the makeup of the entire defense.

While teams like the Cowboys, Bills and possibly the San Diego Chargers will also be involved, it will be difficult for Williams to turn down Belichick, Tom Brady and the chance to compete for multiple Super Bowl rings.
