NBA's Top 10 Point Guard/Power Forward Combinations

Kyle BoggsJun 7, 2018

John Stockton to Karl Malone is the standard by which point guard-power forward combinations are judged.

With an influx of athletic, scoring point guards, the game is changing. We are getting away from the days of dominant big men who set up shop on the low block and thrive with the offense revolving around them. While those players still have success in spots, the more wide-open, free-wheeling, fast-breaking offense is taking the game by storm.

The duos on this list either get out and throw lobs on the break, run pick-and-rolls or pick-and-pops, or drive to the hole and dish to the big.

Even though there are a couple sets of veterans on this list, it’s mostly young up-and-comers who are thriving.

10. Dallas Mavericks: Jason Kidd & Dirk Nowitzki

1 of 10

With a combined 30 years in the league, this is the most experienced duo on the list. While Jason Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki don’t have the spring in their step as some of their counterparts, they have the savvy to know how to win big ballgames.

Finals, anyone?

Neither is putting up phenomenal numbers this year, but you can bet they’d be a scary sight for any team in a seven-game series.

9. Sacramento Kings: Tyreke Evans & DeMarcus Cousins

2 of 10

The exact opposite of Kidd and Nowitzki in terms of experience, these two are still learning what it takes to find success as a duo in the NBA.

DeMarcus Cousins is averaging a double-double (13.9 points and 10.4 rebounds per game) but Tyreke Evans will need to become a better distributor to move this Kings’ combo up the list. Through 15 games he’s averaging nearly as many turnovers (2.8) per game as assists (4.2).

8. San Antonio Spurs: Tony Parker & Tim Duncan

3 of 10

Tony Parker and Tim Duncan make up the most decorated duo on this list. With three championships between them, they have established themselves as a winning duo.

However, much like Dallas, San Antonio has ridden these two for a lot of miles (24 years combined experience).

That hasn’t slowed production much, as they’re averaging right around 28 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists per game between them.

They are one of three duos on this list that has its team in first place in its division.

7. New Jersey Nets: Deron Williams & Kris Humphries

4 of 10

Despite all the negative publicity he’s received for his ill attempt at romance, Kris Humphries is having a solid season. He’s shooting better than 50 percent from the field and averaging a double-double.

Once Deron Williams works his way out of the slump he’s in (37.2 percent from the field, more than four turnovers per game), the Nets will likely move out of fourth place in their division.

Even with his woes shooting and taking care of the ball, Williams is still averaging 18.4 points and 8.4 assists per game.

6. Portland Trail Blazers: Raymond Felton & LaMarcus Aldridge

5 of 10

A newly-established combination with limited time in training camp to jell, Raymond Felton and LaMarcus Aldridge have shown quick chemistry on pick-and-rolls and pick-and-pop jumpers. As the go-to guy this year, Aldridge is putting up 22.5 points a game while Felton is dishing out 7.3 dimes each night.

The downside is Felton’s turnovers (almost three per game) and low shooting percentage (34.6 percent).

5. Boston Celtics: Rajon Rondo & Kevin Garnett

6 of 10

Rajon Rondo remains one of the flashiest and most exciting players in the NBA. He’s scoring more this year (15.0 ppg) than he has in any previous year and he is still averaging more than nine assists a contest.

And while Kevin Garnett’s numbers are on the descent in his 17th NBA season, they’re still efficient.

The reduced minutes KG is playing (30 per game) are good on two levels: They will hopefully keep him fresh for a playoff run and they give TV camera crews more opportunities to watch the league’s best mean-mugger on the bench.

4. Minnesota Timberwolves: Ricky Rubio & Kevin Love

7 of 10

These two Timberwolves haven’t had a lot of time to be able to familiarize themselves with one another but look to be one of the premier combinations to watch in the future.

While Ricky Rubio is still adjusting to the NBA game, Kevin Love is adjusting to being on the receiving end of no-look passes from any and all angles. Love is doing this while playing one of the most complete all-around games of anyone in the NBA this season. He averages 25.2 points and 14.5 rebounds per game.

Once Rubio earns minutes away from veteran Luke Ridnour, his assists will increase from his already-impressive average of 8.3 a game.

This combination—if kept intact—has the ability and flash to take the T-Wolves franchise back to its short-lived glory days in the KG era.

3. Chicago Bulls: Derrick Rose & Carlos Boozer

8 of 10

Carlos Boozer doesn't have mind-boggling stats so far this season. Neither does Derrick Rose. And that’s the scary part for the NBA’s Eastern Conference as this duo already has the Bulls atop the Central Division.

Boozer has started every game but is not playing heavy minutes. His shooting percentage is high and he’s grabbing boards at a good rate. If he’s able to consistently play more minutes once Chicago reaches the postseason, the Bulls will be even scarier.

The reigning MVP is putting up close to 21 points and nine assists a night but has missed the last couple games because of an injury. Keeping him at full strength come May and June should be priority No. 1 for the Bulls' front office.

No team wants to defend Rose playing at 100 percent come playoff time.

2. Golden State Warriors: Monta Ellis and David Lee

9 of 10

The surprise duo of the bunch, Monta Ellis and David Lee just so happen to be the highest-scoring pair on this list. In the past, it would be easy to attribute that to Golden State’s high-scoring nature. However, the Warriors rank 12th in the league in scoring this season, averaging just under 96 points a game.

Ellis and Lee combine for 42.5 of those.

Ellis, known throughout his career as a high-volume shooter, is still chucking up shots at will. His shooting percentage is hovering around 40. But this year he’s passing the ball effectively as well, averaging a career-high 7.1 assists per game.

Lee is a more efficient shooter (53 percent) and is pulling in more than 10 rebounds per game.

These two and their Warrior teammates will need to improve their defense, however, if Golden State is to make a run at the postseason.

1. Los Angeles Clippers: Chris Paul & Blake Griffin

10 of 10

No surprise here.

When the Clippers acquired Chris Paul, Los Angeles and most of the NBA fanbase was buzzing about the alley-oops that would be coming to the Staples Center. Neither Paul nor Blake Griffin has disappointed. The two are lighting up highlight reels night after night.

Both players are making more than half of their shots. Combined they average right around 39 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists per game.

Even with the run-gun-and-fun approach, the turnover total for this duo isn’t as high as most of the other combos on this list.

The play of these two is largely responsible for the Clippers finding themselves in an unusual spot: atop the Pacific Division and the hot ticket in L.A.
