As the roof opens up at University of Phoenix Stadium for today’s matchup involving the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers, fans of both teams should prepare for a handful of elements.

First, the sun is shining here in Arizona, and therefore, weather elements should not hinder either team’s game plan. Also, today’s game may answer some questions for the Arizona Cardinals organization.  The first question involves Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb. Kolb’s first year with the Cardinals has not worked out very well.

What to expect: In the first matchup between the 49ers and Cardinals at Candlestick Park back on November 20, the 49ers out-gained the Cardinals, 164-80. The 49ers fed the Cardinals a heavy dose of running backs, whether it was Frank Gore, Anthony Dixon or Kendall Hunter. Football fans can expect the Cardinals to be aggressive in stopping the running game. As the game goes on, things could get “chippy” and tempers could very well start to flare-up.

What to expect from the 49ers: With a record of 10-2, and already clinching the NFC West, they have no reason to drastically change their gameplan. After all, the 49ers currently have the second seed in the NFC with a one-game lead on the New Orleans Saints (although the 49ers currently hold the tiebreaker if the 49ers and Saints finish with the same record).

Expect the 49ers to continue with business as usual with establishing the run, and getting the ball to Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree and a handful of attempts to their X-factor player, wide receiver Kyle Williams.

Today’s game begins at 1:05 p.m. pacific time.
