Bob Costas Sandusky Interview: Why Costas Shouldn't Interview Joe Paterno Next

Eric BowmanNov 15, 2011

Bob Costas of NBC did a brilliant job in the interview with alleged sex offender Jerry Sandusky, but the next person he should talk about this scandal needs to be Mike McQueary, and not Joe Paterno

The Penn State scandal took an ugly turn on Monday night with Sandusky's phone interview, and questioning Paterno next wouldn't end well.

While I do believe that Paterno needs to speak up, the 84-year-old coach is better suited for an actual press conference instead of an intense one on one interview.

Besides, Paterno isn't likely to discuss the scandal publicly until Sandusky goes to trial on December 7, which is why McQueary should be the next target.

He may not want to speak either, but his role in the scandal is very crucial, and what Sandusky says about him in the interview should make McQueary want to share his voice.

If you haven't seen Sandusky's interview, here it is in it's entirety.

Around the 1:15 mark, Costas brings up McQueary and what he witnessed in 2002, and Sandusky denies that incident ever occurred.

Sandusky is essentially calling McQueary a liar, which is very far fetched considering McQueary testified before a grand jury about what he saw and heard. You can read the 23-page grand jury report here

Costas has to talk to McQueary next because of how important he is to the story.

McQueary is being heavily criticized for only reporting what he saw to Paterno, and not to the police. A sit down interview or even one over the phone would help McQueary save face and give him a chance to defend his name.

The Penn State receivers coach was placed on administrative leave over the weekend because he was receiving threats and "could not function under these circumstances."

John Clark of NBC tweeted some interesting news that is further evidence as to why McQueary must speak up.

Nobody knows what to believe about McQueary anymore, therefore, he needs to start talking, and Costas is the perfect guy to handle the job.

It appears NBC has the inside track, and they must push hard to interview McQueary next and nobody else.

While there are many important people in this scandal, the public needs to hear what McQueary has to say. He is constantly being bashed, and rightfully so. McQueary's conflicting words aren't helping his case, but opening up would help.

All he has to do is one interview and it should help shed some positive light on him. That is, if he doesn't make a fool of himself.

Of course people want to hear what Paterno has to say, but at this point and time, McQueary is more of a focal point in the scandal, and it's time the world hears from him.
