There is not a doubt in my mind that the Chicago Bears, as an organization, want to see Rex Grossman be the starting quarterback of the team, not only for 2008, but for years to come in the future.
The problem with the Bears is that they are an organization that is afraid to admit they made a mistake until it gets to absurd circumstances, like in the case of Cedric Benson earlier this summer.
Rex Grossman has been given every opportunity to succeed as a Chicago Bear and has failed to produce. During the past couple of years, we have learned that Grossman is an all-world practice player but is unable to crack it on gameday.
How much longer do we have to debate the topic? How much more do the Bears have to see before they make a decision on who will be taking snaps on Sept. 7 in Indianapolis?
There is no progress being made right now by the Bears spending this much time giving both Orton and Grossman so many reps. I support Kyle Orton in the competition, but whichever way the Bears decide, they need to make a decision soon.
Personally, I see no reason why a decision was not made before training camp opened up this year. Why not let it be known that either Rex or Orton are going to be the starter, but keep them on a shorter leash than you would in most cases of a starting quarterback?
By splitting reps in practice, the Bears are putting a limit on what will be seen by either of the two quarterbacks this fall.
- B/R Ticket Guide
The only reason the Bears are still debating the quarterback controversy is because they spent a first-round draft pick on Rex Grossman, and he was expected to come in and lead the Bears' offense for a number of years.
It is safe to say he has not lived up to the expectations he entered with, although he did quarterback the Bears to a Super Bowl appearance.
The problem with giving Grossman credit for the Super Bowl run is that he was not the one responsible for the Bears getting there. Instead, that was because the defense was amongst the best in the game, even without Tommie Harris, whom is their most important defensive player.
Orton was expected to be a backup when he was drafted in the third round of the 2005 draft. To me, that is the only reason this team has not decided to name Kyle Orton their starting quarterback. Orton may not be able to throw the deep ball as well as Rex does, however, he doesn't throw nearly as many interceptions either.
What drives me crazy about the Bears is that they still want fans to believe that Rex is going to emerge as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFC. This is a joke, as we have learned that Grossman does not have the patience to do what it takes to ever make the Bears an elite team.
I'm not saying it takes a Tom Brady or Peyton Manning to lead a team to a Super Bowl victory. Eli Manning had underachieved in most peoples' eyes until leading the Giants to the unlikely Super Bowl win last February. Still, Eli was not as outstanding in the playoffs as we saw Brady be last year, or his brother Peyton the year previous.
Because of this, it is obvious, to me, that you do not need to be an elite QB in the NFL to win a Super Bowl. Don't confuse me for thinking Kyle Orton has what it takes to lead this Bears team to the promise land either. In the absolute, best-case scenario, I still feel the Bears are an eight-win team in 2008.
The problem is that Rex Grossman has proven that he will make too many costly mistakes, and he does not give the Bears the best chance to win on the most consistent basis. Career-wise, Kyle Orton has quarterbacked the Bears to an overall record of 12-6, something the Bears do not seem to take into consideration while deciding their quarterback debate.
Get over yourselves Bears, and get on with things. Your failure to make a decision by now is holding this team back. Sure, they likely are not going anywhere this year anyway, but the Bears' failure to make a decision by now is only limiting the team's chances of success by that much more.

Nice work Nick, and once Grossman and Orton are finally off the roster, this team might actually go somewhere. Your article goes with the saying: "A team that has two starting quarterbacks really has none."

YOU....... ARE SOOO RITE BRUH. THEY CANT ADMIT IS THERE 2ND MISTAKE BUT THE 1ST IS THAT THEY DONT GO AFTER FREE AGENTS AND THEN THEY DONT TAKE CARE OF THERE PLAYERS. THATS LIKE ALL CHICAGO TEAMS. AND IF BASEBALL DIDNT HAVE THE MINOR LEAGUES FILLED WITH THOUSANDS OF PLAYERS THEY WOULD B THE SAME. NOW I HAVE A THING FOR FLORIDA COLLEGE PLAYING QB'S. I DONT BELIEVE THEY CAN PLAY IN THE NFL. THE BEST QB BESIDES JIM KELLY TO ME WAS CHARLIE WARD AND WE WILL NEVER NO IF HE COULD OF MADE IT. BUT IF U CAN FIND ME ANY QB PAST OR PRESENT THAT PLAYED AT DIV 1-2-3 OR JUCO IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA WHO MADE A ALLSTAR PERFORMANCE AND WAS A SUCCESSFUL QB IN THE NFL GIVE ME 5!!!!! THERE IS A MENTAL BREAK DOWN WITH THAT POSITION AND THAT STATE BUT WITH THAT BEING SAID I DONT COMPLETLY THROW REX UNDER THE BUS. KYLE HAS CONFIDENT ISSUES HE SCARED TO MAKE A MISTAKE HE MAY ONLY B JUST A BACKUP CLIPBOARD HOLDIN PRACTICE QB. THE THING IWTH REX IS THAT THE SCEMES ARE NOT TO FIT HIS STRENGTHS NOR DOES HE HAVE RECIEVERS TO HELP HIM. THERES NO DIFFERENCE FROM REX G TO ELI MANNING EXCEPT TWO RECIEVERS WHO DONT DROP MUCH AND2 TIGHT ENDS THAT DONT DROP EITHER. ELI MANNING HAS WR. THAT U CAN THROW A BAD BALL AND THEY WILL STILL MAKE THE CATCH. IF TYREE DOESNT MAKE THAT CATCH IN THE SUPERBOWL GAME OVER, BUT INSTEAD HE MAKES AN IMPOSSIBLE CATCH WITH HIS HELMET AND ELI IS SUPERBOWL MVP AND LOOKS LIKE A HERO AND A LEADER.

Grossman has a career record of 19-11 with the Bears and really played well after Griese got hurt in Oaklnad last year

Watch training camp this year and the what Grossman did after he was benched last year. He has half the INT's
in training camp this year compared to Orton, has learned to throw the ball away, and yes, he even steps into
the pocket. He checks down to the open receivers, and does not just heave the ball or force it into tight coverage. He has really started to mature this year, as all quarterbacks must do. People keep forgetting how many years Manning,a Favre and Brady have been in the league before they became successful...Favre holds the record for the most INT's yet he is deemed a legend. Doesn't make sense to me. If you look at Grossman's career, he has only played on full year, 2006, and unlike what you stated above, he did contribute to their Bear;s getting to the Superbowl. Please go back and look at the
Seattle and New Orleans play off games that year. He has the talent, and now that he is maturing, he has the smarts to
be a good quarterback. That is if the media would shut up, the fans would support him, and the coaches would give
him the o-line that is requried for any QB to succeed. I am an avid Bear fan and have watched films from every training camp this year. If Grossman starts, as he should from the performance in training camp, I think the media will be silenced, and I wonder how many will go back and retract their statements.

I still fail to understand where fans are coming from when they say that Rex hasn't produced. He was the starting quarterback on a team that went to the super bowl. And about that super bowl, the defense was as much to blame as Rex's interceptions. And don't even give me that garbage that he had nothing to do with them going to the super bowl. He saved the defense in the Seattle and New Orleans playoff games.
I'm sure you were the same fan who blasted the "schoop" days and begged for the team to air it out and throw it down field - you have that now and you want Kyle Orton as your QB. Kyle Orton loses all accuracy after fifteen yards and is about the most boring quarterback to watch.
Rex has been given many chances, and he has succeeded - has has one of the highest winning percentages among active quarterbacks. The guy's growth and maturity at the position were completely stunted by injuries. If anything the kid just has bad luck.
Bears fans are morons -- you actually begged for Brian Griese!! Brian Freakin Griese!
I've actually heard people state that they need to cut Rex start Oron, and Caleb needs to be your backup.
Again, Bears fans are idiots. They really are. They never fail to realize that ther's a reason a guy is a backup quarterback.
Go Rex. Go Bears.

Rex is a very accurate passer with big play capability when he has time to throw; however, he does not improvise well when he is under pressure. He just has to eliminate his mistakes. I believe he will, and if the o-line can stand their ground, it will be a good year for Rex and the Bears.

The Bears need to clean house and get new QB's. The Bears defense, special teams and running game got the Bears to the Super Bowl. If I remember correctly Grossman fumbled the hand off from the center a number of times during the Super Bowl and several other games. Grossman also threw critical int's in the SB that gave the Colts great field position and a TD return by the Colts D. The O- Line can be perfect but if he is unable to handle the snap from center nothing is going to work. I can't for the life of me figure out why the Bears refuse to aquire a solild QB. I predict the Bears record will be 6-10/ 7-9. Lovie Smith's position could very well be hanging in the balance. I appeciate your positive out look, but I hate to tell you, the glass is half empty on Rex Grossman the 08 season.

I'm sorry, bit this article is crap.
Rex Grossman not producing?
Two NFC North Titles, a Division Championship and a Superbowl berth isn't producing?
Having the best record for a Bears QB in two decades isn't producing?
So he's had some speed bumps. So what? Peyton Manning threw 27 INT's as a rookie, went 3-13 his first year, and didn't even sniff the playoffs until his third year as the starting QB.
Rex has gotten a lot of heat for stuff he can't control. 3 different offensive coordinators trying to shape him, 3 different QB coaches, two different head coaches and an assload of crappy offensive players.
And uh, yes, Rex Grossman had plenty to do with getting to the Superbowl. Let me clue you in, we had the #5 defense overall in 2006. In 2005, we were # 1. We were # 1 from 2001-2003 as well. Why did we not get to the Superbowl then? If Rex had nothing to do with it, then why, before he ever set foot on the field in '04, were we not in the playoffs and the Superbowl all the time?
We had an even BETTER defense, great special teams, and Grossman wasn't even drafted yet - yet no playoffs, no Superbowl. The ONE year he starts, we go to the Superbowl and you're going to make up some bullshit that he had nothing to do with it?
And YOU, the one bitching about a QB being carried, support Kyle Orton? Who LITERALLY was carried in 2005 to the playoffs, posting the league's worst stats EVER for a QB with 10+ wins, who only threw 9 TD's in 15 starts compared to Rex's 23 TD's in 16 starts, yet still managed to throw 15 INT's - 5 coming in ONE game. You're cheering for Orton?
God I hate Rex bashers. They're so ridiculously moronic it makes me sick.

If the media would just shut up and list all the fact that are infront of them you would see that Rex has a much better UP SIDE than Kyle. THis article mentions that Kyle is 12-6 as a starter but fails to mention that Rex is 19-11. Kyle is a great QB if you expect your offense to go 3 and out on 70% of your drives, putting a lot of pressure on your defense. Rex may take some questionable chances but he still has the potential to put up huge numbers. Lets not forget that Rex was the NFC offensive player of the month in September 2006. There is absolutely no way that Orton would ever be considered for such an award. He doesn't have the ability to put up those numbers.
