The Best QB Matchups in the Super Bowl Since 1985

Colin LinneweberJan 27, 2010

The Indianapolis Colts will play the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV on Feb. 7 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL.

The contest is expected to be an offensive shootout, pitting Colts' quarterback Peyton Manning against Saints' signal-caller Drew Brees.

Manning, 33, a four-time NFL MVP, and Brees, 31, a three-time All-Pro selection, are two of the greatest quarterbacks to grace the gridiron during this generation.

In recognition of the impending Super Bowl matchup, I decided to rank the best quarterback showdowns to have occurred in the Super Bowl since 1985.

1) Super Bowl XXIV - Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers destroyed John Elway and the Denver Broncos 55-10 in the most lopsided championship game ever at the Superdome in New Orleans.

Montana, a three-time First Team All-Pro selection, who made the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team, was named the Super Bowl MVP after he completed 22 of 29 passes for 297 yards and five touchdowns.

Elway, a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and five-time All-Pro, played horrifically in the embarrassing blowout loss.

In total, Elway completed 10 out of 26 passes for a measly 108 yards and two interceptions.

On that Jan. evening, Montana and the 49ers overwhelmed Elway and the Broncos.

Nevertheless, this Super Bowl showcased perhaps the two greatest quarterbacks of the NFL.

2) Super Bowl XIX - Montana and the 'Niners thrashed Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins 38-16 at Stanford Stadium in California.

The pregame hype focused on the tremendous quarterback matchup and the two signal-callers didn’t disappoint as both Marino and Montana threw for over 300 yards.

Ultimately, the Fish weren’t of the same caliber as the 'Niners, and San Francisco waltzed to a victory.

Montana, who was named the Super Bowl MVP, completed 24 of 35 passes for three touchdowns.

Additionally, ā€œJoe Coolā€ rushed the ball five times for 59 yards and a score.

Upon the conclusion of the contest, 49ers Head Coach Bill Walsh said, ā€œJoe Montana is the greatest quarterback today, maybe the greatest of all-time.ā€

3) Super Bowl XXXII - After failing in their three previous attempts, Elway and the Broncos finally captured the Vince Lombardi Trophy by upsetting Brett Favre and the heavily favored Green Bay Packers 31-24 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

Elway did not perform at an elite level, as he only completed 11 of 22 passes with an interception.

In contrast, Favre, a three-time AP NFL MVP and 11-time Pro Bowl selection, dominated the action in ā€œAmerica’s Finest City.ā€

Favre impressively completed 25 of 42 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns.

Nevertheless, despite Favre’s stellar showing, Elway was at long last a champion.

4) Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII - In successive years, Troy Aikman and the Dallas Cowboys manhandled Jim Kelly and the Buffalo Bills to win back-to-back crowns.

Despite a roster littered with tremendous talent, the Bills were simply putrid when it mattered most.

In Super Bowl XXVII, Aikman and the 'Boys battered Kelly and the Bills 52-17 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Aikman, a six-time Pro-Bowl selection, who was deservedly elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006, completed 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns to earn Super Bowl MVP honors.

Kelly, a four-time Pro-Bowl selection who was inducted into Canton in 2002, played hideously before he reinjured his leg, and was replaced behind center by playoff hero Frank Reich.

Aikman and Kelly were both remarkable quarterbacks for the ages.

Unfortunately for Kelly, both Aikman and his Cowboys teams were also better.

5) Super Bowl XXXVI - Tom Brady and the New England Patriots shocked Kurt Warner and the St. Louis Rams 20-17 to capture their first championship in team history at the Superdome.

A young Brady played with great composure and he completed 16 of 27 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown.

Brady was named the Super Bowl MVP primarily because of the manner in which he marched his team down the field to get in position for the game-winning field goal.

New England somewhat rattled Warner and forced him to toss two costly interceptions.

Still, Warner, a five-time Pro-Bowl selection and two-time AP NFL MVP, amassed an incredible 365 yards in the air and led his team on a furious comeback that ultimately failed.

These two quarterbacks will inevitably ascend up this list with time.

However, along with Favre, Warner and Brady are the only two signal-callers on this list who are not currently enshrined in Canton.

*Honorable Mention - Trent Dilfer and the Baltimore Ravens suffocated Kerry ā€œVodkaā€ Collins and the New York Giants 34-7 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

A little levity, huh?

Rex Ryan and the Jets "are the biggest show in town"
