Brock Osweiler Will Compete for Starting QB Spot, Browns Vice President Says
While the Cleveland Browns used the Brock Osweiler trade to acquire a draft pick, the quarterback apparently has a chance at earning a starting spot next season.
"We expect Brock to be here," Browns executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown said Wednesday, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "He is in and has done a good job coming in the first couple of days. He is a positive young man who has some ability and talent. We look forward to him trying to establish himself here and have a chance to compete to be the starting quarterback."
The Houston Texans dealt Osweiler to the Browns in order to remove $16 million of guaranteed salary from the books. In exchange, Cleveland received two draft picks while only giving up a fourth-round selection.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported shortly after the Browns debated releasing the quarterback immediately.
However, the 26-year-old remains with the organization and apparently now has a chance to compete for a starting job in 2017.
Osweiler finished last season with 2,957 passing yards in 15 games, totaling 15 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. While this was a major disappointment for the free-agent acquisition, a Browns team that went through five quarterbacks in 2016 should keep its options open.
