Cheering For the Washington Redskins Is Like Having an Ugly Wife

John FitzpatrickOct 6, 2009

The late Jimmy Soul may have known a thing or two about being a Washington Redskins fan.

You see, his boys gave him grief for making an ugly woman his wife. But if you look at it from his personal point of view, you should get an ugly woman to marry you.

(I beg your pardon, all the female fans out there. Just bear with me on this one.)

Basically, what Jimmy Soul was trying to say was if you marry a pretty woman, she will find ways to break your heart.

But if you make an ugly woman your wife, then you'll be happy for the rest of your life.

You may wonder what any of that has to do with the Redskins

But it makes sense, you'll see.

The Redskins, with their most recent mistake-filled victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, have won two games in the ugliest fashion.

At this point in the season, Redskins fans need to be honest with themselves about this team: They are ugly.

But like Jimmy Soul said, we shouldn't be disappointed about it.

We should be happy about it.

Because as many flaws as the team has (and they have many), we know what to expect every week from them.

We have lowered expectations.

There is no reason to get all worked up about the Redskins not scoring more than 20 points per game, because we know that just won't happen.

While fans of the Colts, Broncos, Giants, Vikings, and Saints are happy to be walking around with a pretty team on their arm, ultimately their team will break their hearts.

Two teams make the Super Bowl, and only one of them can win it.

Shoot, fans of pretty teams like the Jets, with their 3-1 record and 'poised' rookie quarterback, are finding the thrill is gone.

But Redskins fans won't have their hearts broken anytime soon.

We know the Redskins are not very good. We know we are not cheering for the prettiest team.

And we are OK with that.

You see, as many flaws as this team has, they also have some positives.

They can cook...sometimes with a little sizzle.

See Jason Campbell's dazzling play-action pass to Santana Moss that went for a touchdown on Sunday.

And they are not going anywhere.

The Redskins are an institution here in Washington, D.C., and unlike teams in New Orleans, Jacksonville, and Oakland, they will not be threatening to run off with someone or someplace else.

That being said, while some cosmetic enhancements (trades, free agents, and draft picks) certainly make a team look better, sometimes a complete makeover is in order.

So until management remodels (euphemism for rebuilds) the team, we have to accept the Redskins for who they are—the ugly wife.
