Damontre Moore to Seahawks: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction

Joe PantornoNov 1, 2016

Free-agent defensive end Damontre Moore signed with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, per the team.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and NFL.com's Mike Garafolo were the first to report the news.

Moore hasn't appeared in the league since last season, when he spent 11 games with the New York Giants and three with the Miami Dolphins.

The Giants took him in the third round of the 2013 draft out of Texas A&M in hopes of him developing into a speedy pass-rusher opposite of Jason Pierre-Paul.

In 42 games with the team over two-plus seasons, he never reached those expectations, as he recorded 8.5 sacks and 60 total tackles.

The lack of production was further put under a microscope given his off-field issues, which included multiple violations of team rules and a $15,000 fine for partaking in a brawl against the then-St. Louis Rams in 2014.

He sealed his fate in December 2015 when he fought teammate Cullen Jenkins over a free pair of headphones, leading the Giants to release him and end the experiment that Walter Football forecast before he was drafted:

"

Moore is one of the biggest mysteries in the 2013 NFL Draft. There are lot of questions about him as a player and as a person. He was massively productive in college and displayed a natural ability to get after the quarterback. However, Moore also earned a bad reputation off the field of being extremely immature. ... Scouts told WalterFootball.com Moore is extremely immature and they believe he will indulge in the party scene that comes with being an NFL player. They also said he may have some positive drug tests.

"

After playing three games for the Dolphins to end the 2015 season, Moore was cut in May before signing on with the Oakland Raiders. He didn't last long there either and was cut in August.

The Seahawks are looking for help at defensive end after Michael Bennett went down with a knee injury that will require surgery on Wednesday, via Pro Football Talk's Zac Jackson. However, Moore's past maturity issues do provide a risk with this signing.

However, if he is able to focus just on football with this latest opportunity to catch back on, the 24-year-old could prove to the league that he can be a serviceable defensive end for the foreseeable future.
