LeBron James Approves of David Blatt Receiving Championship Ring
A day after David Blatt confirmed he would accept a championship ring from the Cleveland Cavaliers following their NBA Finals triumph over the Golden State Warriors, LeBron James told reporters he approved of the team's decision to offer him the coveted jewelry.
"Who am I to say who can or can’t get a ring?" James said on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press' Tom Withers.
Tuesday, Blatt told international hoops reporter David Pick that he was happy to accept Cleveland's offer after he was fired in January and replaced by Tyronn Lue.
"[Cleveland] offered and I graciously accepted because they presented it to me in a way that was very respectful," Blatt said, per Pick. "The Cavaliers wanted to give me a ring because the organization felt that I contributed to the championship."
And while Blatt acknowledged that he wasn't at the helm when the team mounted a comeback from 3-1 down against the Warriors, he took pride in what the Cavaliers accomplished during his year-and-a-half in Northeast Ohio.
"It's not my championship, I recognize that, but I also feel that I did something there, and I graciously accepted because it was a gracious offer on their part," he said. "The big thing for me was that I felt that they felt that it was earned, not given, therefore I was happy to accept."
Blatt—who now coaches Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul of the Turkish Super League—went 83-40 and helped the Cavaliers clinch a 2014-15 Eastern Conference title during his year-and-a-half on the job.
And while the Cavs were 30-11 prior to his dismissal last season, the team didn't appear to jibe in ways that reflected its tremendous talent and title potential.
But now that Lue is in charge and the franchise has exorcised demons by virtue of the historic June comeback, the Cavaliers can turn their attention to a title defense that figures to be rather difficult following Kevin Durant's decision to join the defending Western Conference champions.
