Travis Benjamin, Dontrelle Inman's Fantasy Outlook After Keenan Allen's Injury

Rob GoldbergSep 11, 2016

The San Diego Chargers will need the rest of their receiving corps to step up after Keenan Allen was carted off with a right knee injury against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, per Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport later reported the Chargers suspect Allen suffered a torn ACL following initial testing.

Allen has been quarterback Philip Rivers' favorite option in the passing game since he entered the league in 2013. The former third-round pick has averaged 8.5 targets per game in three years, including 11.1 per game before suffering a season-ending kidney injury in 2015.

Allen recorded six receptions for 63 yards on seven targets before leaving the field Sunday.

Those passes will have to go somewhere, meaning there will be a lot of fantasy points to go around.

Dontrelle Inman saw a big uptick in production when Allen got hurt a year ago. He played in six games after the Week 10 bye, totaling 23 catches for 316 yards in that stretch. Prior to that point, he had only 12 receptions for 170 yards. Inman was not targeted before Allen left the field Sunday.

At 6'3", Inman can be a big-time threat all over the field, especially near the end zone.

However, the big winner will probably be Travis Benjamin, who is already one of the most dynamic players on the roster. The former Cleveland Browns receiver signed with the team in the offseason after having the best season of his career in 2015, finishing with 966 yards and five touchdowns despite mediocre quarterback play. He had two receptions for 16 yards on two targets before Allen was injured Sunday.

Benjamin provides the Chargers with the big-play threat they've been missing, an option the team will probably utilize even more without Allen on the field. With a legitimate quarterback in Rivers throwing him passes, he can produce with more efficiency.

Allen's injury provides an opportunity for Inman to see an increased role, which makes him worth an addition in most fantasy leagues. At the same time, Benjamin—as well as Danny Woodhead and Antonio Gates—should get more touches and become impact players on the field and in fantasy lineups.
