Williams Struggling to Shake Injury Bug
After four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, Williams was released and then signed with the Dolphins during the offseason. Serving as the replacement for Olivier Vernon, Williams tallied a sack in Week 1.
Following a six-year stint with the Houston Texans, the former No. 1 overall draft pick enjoyed three excellent seasons with the Bills, totaling 38 sacks and making two of his four Pro Bowl appearances.
Things went south for the former North Carolina State standout in 2015, however, as he could not adapt to head coach Rex Ryan's defense and posted just five sacks, which was his worst output in a full season since he registered 4.5 sacks as a rookie in 2006.
While the scheme fit was an issue for Williams, the fact that he was banged up for much of the year didn't help his cause.
Although he missed just one game, he was hampered by a myriad of ailments and was on the injury report for much of the campaign.
The Richlands, North Carolina, native has been durable over the course of his career, sitting out just one game since a torn pectoral cost him 11 contests in 2011.
The 11-year veteran is 31 years old, however, and durability is becoming a greater concern.
Fellow starting defensive end Cameron Wake missed nine games for the Dolphins last season, so there is reason to wonder whether the experienced pass-rushing duo can handle the rigors of an NFL season.
If Williams misses time again, Andre Branch and Julius Warmsley will be tasked with stepping in. Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will likely have to take on a greater pass-rushing role as well.
