Kaepernick Making Progress After Multiple Procedures
Wednesday, April 6
Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, citing Mindi Bach, reported Wednesday that Kaepernick hasn't endured any setbacks during the recovery process, which puts him on track to return to full strength by May. The update comes as rumors about his future continue to swirl.
Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reported in January that Kaepernick also had procedures done to alleviate pain in his thumb and knee while recovering from the shoulder issue. He projected a mid-April timetable for a complete recovery from all of the ailments, so not much has changed.
"Once again, I'm preparing to be healthy and win the Super Bowl. That's all my focus is," Kaepernick said after the season, per Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com.
Kaepernick is coming off the worst season of his career, as he tallied just six passing touchdowns while tossing five interceptions in nine games (eight starts). He also had just one rushing touchdown, matching his career low since becoming a starter in 2012.
The 49ers hired Chip Kelly, whose fast-paced offensive approach would seemingly fit the Nevada product's skill set, as their new head coach in January. Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN reported Kelly doesn't want the sixth-year pro running the offense, though.
In turn, Kaepernick's name has been linked to the reigning champion Denver Broncos in trade talks, but his contract is an issue. His cap hit for 2016 is a shade under $16 million, and it's slated to rise to $21.4 million by the final year of the deal in 2020, according to Spotrac.
Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reported Monday that Kaepernick isn't currently interested in taking a pay cut to join the Broncos, and the 49ers don't want to retain salary in a trade. So it has left the sides at a stalemate, at least for the time being.
Whether he's with the 49ers, Broncos or another team, the coaching staff will probably take it easy on Kaepernick until training camp as he completes his recovery. There's no use pushing him too hard during offseason workouts and risk a setback at this stage.
It's probably best for everybody involved if he lands in Denver, with the team seeking to replace the retired Peyton Manning and free-agent departure Brock Osweiler. But the veteran quarterback isn't eager to give up money to take it happen.
