Arsenal Transfer News: Latest Stars Eyed by Arsene Wenger, Top Gunners Rumours

Tom SunderlandOct 23, 2015

Arsenal have suffered a transfer blow before the January window has even opened after learning Celta Vigo's Nolito will not be moving this winter, but the hopes of signing Boca Juniors forward Jonathan Calleri look brighter.

Spain international Nolito is showing sensational form in La Liga once again this season and has been linked with Barcelona, but he told Radio Marca this week he won't be going anywhere in midseason (h/t Goal's Joe Wright): "God will decide my future. I'm not leaving in January. I'm happy in Vigo."

Celta have climbed to second in La Liga after eight games this season thanks in large part to the winger's dazzling string of performances, which includes a recent match-winner in the 2-1 victory over Villarreal last Sunday.

That display led David Cartlidge of beIN Sports to rightly describe the 29-year-old as a game-changer, a quality that has assuredly helped justify Arsenal's interest in his talents:

After a poor start to the campaign, the Gunners are beginning to find their feet in attack and showed their credentials with a 2-0 beating of Bayern Munich on Tuesday to rejuvenate their European campaign.

It's also worth mentioning the return of Danny Welbeck, expected back around Christmas time, will add another option to Arsene Wenger's attack, even if the Englishman has struggled since moving to north London.

As can often be the case for Premier League clubs competing with Europe's best and brightest—in this case, Barcelona—Arsenal were reported by Mundo Deportivo (h/t Metro) to be offering Nolito a substantial pay upgrade:

The English giants may not be signing the player this winter, but Arsenal may yet hold out hope in convincing malleable forward Nolito to join their cause at the end of the 2015-16 season.

Wenger will also have major competition if he's to lure Boca starlet Calleri to the Emirates Stadium, with speculation mounting around the South American sensation.

Calleri has been in good form alongside Carlos Tevez this season, and talkSPORT cited Argentinian outlet TyC Sports reporting Chelsea have stepped up their interest in the Gunners target.

The 22-year-old has scored 20 goals across all competitions in 2015, but Brighton and Hove Albion reporter Andy Naylor has suggested the top-flight giants will have some lower-league competition, too:

That goes to show just how popular a candidate the Buenos Aires-based star really is, with Wenger looking to add to a Spanish-speaking contingent that already includes the likes of Santi Cazorla, Hector Bellerin and Mikel Arteta.

Calleri is a different brand of striker to what the Gunners already have at their disposal, too, with Argentinian expert Sam Kelly noting his tenacious streak earlier this season:

That's something the likes of Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud don't necessarily bring to the table, and even though Arsenal recently felt the full brunt of Chelsea striker Diego Costa, perhaps some of that passion wouldn't go astray in their setup.

The Blues are said to see Calleri as a replacement for Radamel Falcao, who looks set to leave Stamford Bridge once his loan expires, but Arsenal would be smart to make a more serious lunge for the forward.
