Matt Flynn to Jets: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Alec NathanAug 19, 2015

Geno Smith's jaw injury left the New York Jets thin at quarterback, so the team turned to the free-agent market to address its lack of depth under center.

On Wednesday, the Jets announced they signed quarterback Matt Flynn, according to the team's official website.

ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported Flynn was headed to the Jets on Tuesday evening. The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta added that he would be inked to a one-year deal. Tom Pelissero of USA Today added Flynn's deal was worth $930,000, with a $60,000 signing bonus.

The signing comes after Flynn reportedly worked out for the Jets on Aug. 14, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

After Smith broke his jaw and was sidelined six to 10 weeks following an altercation with former Jets and current Buffalo Bills linebacker IK Enemkpali, New York was left with veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie Bryce Petty as its primary options at quarterback.

The Jets proceeded to scan the market and landed on Flynn as a serviceable stopgap solution even after the New England Patriots cut him due to a hamstring injury that produced a failed physical, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

"I know he worked hard, it was frustrating he couldn't get out there, [that] we couldn't see him out there," Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said, per Reiss.

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan outlined the role any veteran quarterback brought into the team would be asked to play prior to signing Flynn.

"It is something we're looking to do," Maccagan said on Aug. 18, according to NJ.com's Darryl Slater. "We have the ability to do that, potentially, for the rest of training camp. ... Having a veteran quarterback in there as a No. 2 option or No. 3 option has some value in it."

A career backup who's made seven starts over the course of seven NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders, Flynn owns a completion percentage of 61.3 and a touchdown-to-interception ratio of just over 1.5.

While he was briefly pegged as the Seahawks' starter in the summer of 2012 after signing a lucrative three-year, $26 million deal, Russell Wilson's emergence thwarted those plans. Since then, he's been stuck in second- and third-string roles.

Flynn shouldn't be a threat to beat out Fitzpatrick for the starting job while Smith recovers, but his experience makes him a prime candidate to step into the No. 2 spot while Petty gets acclimated to the speed of the pro game.

"The Jets would be running a big risk by going into Week 1 with Petty as the understudy to Fitzpatrick, even though acquiring a veteran No. 2 like Flynn would mean they'd have to keep four quarterbacks on their 53-man active roster until Smith is healthy enough to play," Slater wrote.

Barring an injury to Fitzpatrick, it would be a shock to see Flynn get regular-season reps before Smith returns.
