Player to Watch this Weekend: Andrew Luck, QB, Indianapolis Colts

There are a plethora of players who deserve the attention of football fans, but Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has more of an influence on whether his team wins or loses Sunday than any other player remaining in the postseason.

Luck has taken the pressure of becoming the face of a franchise in stride and has excelled on the field, passing for 4,761 yards, 40 touchdowns and 16 interceptions this year. Add in the fact that the Indianapolis pass attack finished the regular season ranked first in the NFL with 305.9 yards per game, and it is clear Luck is the cornerstone of the offensive game plan.

When asked about what he thinks of Luck, New England cornerback Darrelle Revis told Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com, “A rising young star. The passes he throws, the way he runs the offense, kind of looks like Peyton Manning all over again. You have to give him his credit. He’s worked hard, brought them this far.”

Beating Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati Bengals in the Wild Card Round and Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in the divisional round has brought Luck serious credibility, but the possibility of also beating Tom Brady and the New England Patriots has the football world buzzing.

ESPN’s Stats and Info Twitter account talked about the lack of success Luck found the first time these two teams met this season, but he reminded fans the history he could make Sunday:

On the same note, Colin Cowherd talked about the echelon Luck would enter with a win:

The key to success for Luck will be trusting his receivers and protecting the football. With a talented group of veterans like Reggie Wayne and Hakeem Nicks, younger wide receivers like T.Y. Hilton and Donte Moncrief and pass-catching tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, there should be ample opportunities for Luck to move the ball down the field.

There is no questioning the talent of Revis and the New England secondary, but the team gave up 292 yards and four touchdowns to Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens last week. Luck is a superior player to Flacco, and the Patriots defense has been put on notice.

As long as Luck can protect the football and avoid costly turnovers, the Colts offense will put the team in a good position to win. How the Indianapolis defensive unit handles Brady will also play a major role in the outcome, though.

Predicted stat line: 33-of-44 for 350 yards, three touchdowns and one interception; three rushes for 10 yards.
