Aaron Ramsey Condemns Arsenal Fans' 'Unfair Criticism' of Arsene Wenger

Nick AkermanDec 11, 2014

Aaron Ramsey has condemned Arsenal fans who continue to taunt Arsene Wenger with "unfair criticism."

Wenger has been targeted with severe abuse by sections of the Arsenal support in recent weeks following defeats to Manchester United and Stoke City.

However, the Welsh midfielder—who netted a terrific double during Tuesday's 4-1 win over Galatasaray—confirmed Arsenal's squad remains fully behind its boss, reported by Jeremy Wilson of The Telegraph:

"

He has been under some unfair criticism but we are in it together. We wanted to get the result [against Galatasaray] for us and for him. Every player here wants to work hard for him, we have proven that again. I think whenever we go into a game, he knows our qualities, always believes in us and gives us a great feeling. Every time we go out there we are representing ourselves, our club and our manager.

Ramsey is perhaps symbolic of what Wenger has gotten right at Arsenal.

The manager's unyielding belief in his midfielder's ability has seen the 23-year-old become one of the Gunners' most important players. He contributes to goals, is classy in possession and is able to win matches with moments of magic, as highlighted in Turkey (per Sport TV's YouTube video):

It wasn't long ago Ramsey was a laughing stock who looked unable to deliver on his potential. A significant pep talk from Wenger, alongside extended playing time, helped him develop into a star. This kind of faith has always been the manager's strong point, but during an indifferent run of form, many Arsenal fans have failed to replicate his forgiving nature.

This was underlined when away supporters unfurled a banner during the trip to West Bromwich Albion. As reported byMetro's Vaishali Bhardwaj, it simply read: "Arsene. Thanks for the memories but it's time to say goodbye."

This also made an appearance prior to the match with Galatasaray, as highlighted by one fan's tweet:

Abuse aimed at Wenger after the recent defeat to Stoke also made the headlines. Supporters shouting at the manager in a train station is extremely unhelpful for all involved. Not only does it place Wenger under more obvious pressure, but the entire fanbase is easily tarnished with the opinion the boss must go.

The incident in question can be seen below (language NSFW):

As noted by Wilson, Wenger can still count on "many supporters [who are] fiercely protective and supportive" of his position. Even so, B/R UK's James McNicholas noted that—even after the win over Southampton—many onlookers are unwilling to budge from the opinion Wenger should leave:

Wenger's sacking would eliminate the last untouchable (and longest-tenured) manager of Premier League football and could slow Arsenal's progress even further. We've seen the struggles of Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

Although Wenger's ability to plod along is frustrating—that fourth spot beckons once more—a whole new reality may set in once he says goodbye. Whether this would be a "backwards to go forwards" decision is debatable.

It's players like Ramsey who will keep the Frenchman in his job. Criticism of Wenger doesn't help anybody at the club, especially the players, who will feel pressure to perform for their struggling leader.
