Creating a Plan to Save Arsenal's Transfer Window
Arsenal have less than a month to save their transfer window.
It started so promisingly. Back in June, Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis proclaimed the club's newfound wealth and ambition.
Since then, the weeks have rolled by with little progress. While Arsenal have been able to shift much of the deadwood in their squad, they have completed just one signing this summer: that of French youth international Yaya Sanogo.
Go on to the next slide to discover the steps Arsenal must take to salvage their summer.
Raise the Luis Suarez Bid to £50 Million
1 of 4Arsenal need a marquee signing to make a statement of intent this summer. After their dallying, Luis Suarez remains their only conceivable option.
The row between Suarez and Liverpool has reached breaking point. According to Alex Hankin of the Mirror, Suarez feels Arsenal's bid of just over £40 million entitles him to leave. Liverpool disagree and are intransigent. The Uruguayan has threatened legal action and has already involved the PFA.
Things are about to get very messy.
Arsenal should do the sensible thing and compromise. Raising their bid to £50 million would surely give Liverpool the incentive they need to sell a disgruntled player. It's also not a huge increase on the Gunners' current bid.
Even those Arsenal fans with reservations about signing Suarez are desperate to see this saga reach a conclusion. If Arsenal dangle a £50 million carrot in front of Liverpool, they will surely take the bait.
Go Back for Lars Bender
2 of 4Arsenal still need a defensive midfielder to lend support to Mikel Arteta.
Having sent Francis Coquelin out on loan, that need is even more pressing. With both Abou Diaby and Emmanuel Frimpong struggling with injury too, Arsenal urgently need reinforcements.
According to The Guardian's Dominic Fifield, Arsenal had an £18.5 million bid for German international Lars Bender knocked back in early July. Arsenal should return to Leverkusen with a improved bid. Bender fits the profile of what they're looking for: He's young, athletic and technically gifted.
Signing Bender would plug another gap in Arsenal's increasingly thin squad.
Go for Ashley Williams
3 of 4As things stand, Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are Arsenal's only fit senior centre-backs. Skipper Thomas Vermaelen has a back injury that will keep him out until October at the earliest.
Full-back Bacary Sagna has been pressed into action as a central defender in preseason, but a club of Arsenal's stature requires a specialist.
According to Alex Hankin of the Mirror, Swansea captain Ashley Williams is back on Arsenal's radar. Arsene Wenger should move quickly to secure the Welsh defender.
Reintroduce Nicklas Bendtner
4 of 4This final proposition is bound to be a controversial one.
Arsenal are clearly struggling to offload Nicklas Bendtner. The big Dane has spent the last couple of seasons out on loan, with no club willing to take a risk on a permanent transfer.
Here's an idea: Rather than banish Bendtner to the reserves or send him to a club who won't even pay the entirety of his wages, why not have him as part of the first-team squad?
Although Bendtner is a flawed player, he remains superior to the likes of Marouane Chamakh and Park Chu-Young.
Having him as a third-choice centre-forward would be no bad thing.
