Sky, a Wire Fox Terrier, won the Best in Show at the National Dog Show 2012 in Philadelphia, PA on Thanksgiving Day.
While most Americans were watching the NFL this afternoon, the city of Philadelphia was hosting the National Dog Show. It's not quite the Puppy Bowl, but it definitely qualifies as newsworthy.
Over 1,000 dogs took part in the competition, and the judges had difficult choices to make. In the end, they decided to award the Best in Show to Sky.
One by one, dogs were judged until they got down to the final group. Once each group had a winner, it was time to get picky.
Sky was able to win the judges over in the final show ring and it was up to the other dogs left standing to try to overtake her.
The four-year-old dog won the Terrier group to get to the final judgment, but there was still competition to beat.
An Affenpinscher, an American Foxhound, a Great Dane, a Tibetan Spaniel, a Bearded Collie and a Field Collie were also up for the coveted award.
Once the different groups get compared to one other, it's up to the judges to come with a criteria and pick the best dog.
Sky may be a newcomer, but there were some familiar trends with the award.
A Terrier won the Best in Show for the second consecutive year.
Eira, who is also a Terrier, won the award at last year's competition. Terriers will now get a lot of attention next year, but for now they can enjoy back-to-back titles.
Not only were the dogs the same breed, but they also had the same handler. Gabriel Rangel handled both winners and has won the award three times since 2009. If you are looking for a favorite for next year, pick his dog.
More information and photos can be found at NBCSports.com. In case anyone was too busy watching football, they will re-air the event Friday night at 8 p.m.
So, if you were planning on watching it Friday night, spoiler alert!
