DeSean Jackson: Eagles WR Must Prove Fantasy Worth vs. Saints in Week 9
Jennifer Stewart-US PRESSWIRE

If DeSean Jackson can't put up huge numbers for fantasy owners in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints, there's a good chance he won't put up huge numbers at all for the rest of the season.

In other words, he's playing for a starting spot next Monday night. No, not on the Eagles—on fantasy football teams around the country.

That's right, folks—it just got real.

While Jackson hasn't been terrible this season, he's hardly been justifying a starting spot on fantasy rosters. His 34 receptions for 524 yards on 61 targets are nice marks after seven games, but he has just one touchdown on the year.

More importantly, he's scored double-digit fantasy points in standard-scoring leagues just twice. Thus far, he's been nothing but a decent flex play for owners.

But that should change against the Saints. Coming into Sunday night's game against the Denver Broncos, the Saints were 31st in the NFL in fantasy points allowed to opposing wide receivers (31.6 per week). They're currently 30th in the NFL in passing yards allowed (304.6).

After allowing Denver's wideouts to catch 13 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns, the Saints did little to change the notion that their defense is fantasy gold if you have offensive players going against them. Let's just say Peyton Manning looked like he was playing a video game on the easy setting out there.

It should be an opportunity for the Eagles to take shots down the field, something they haven't really done much this season. With Michael Vick's big arm and the speed of Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, most teams prefer to keep safeties over the top to prevent the big play.

But this year, the Saints have been vulnerable to the big play. Really, they've been vulnerable to any sort of play. If ever there was a week we might see the old Jackson—you know, the deep threat that would streak down the field under a 60-yard bomb from Vick and score a touchdown—this is it.

What will you do if DeSean Jackson has a poor fantasy performance against the Saints?

Looking at this game, the word "shootout" comes to mind. The Saints haven't stopped anyone from scoring points this year, while the Eagles are fresh off of getting burned for 30 points by the Atlanta Falcons. They didn't force a Falcons punt until the fourth quarter, and now they get Drew Brees.

Yeah, I think a shootout is likely.

That should—should—mean big things for Jackson. He should—should—put up huge points for fantasy owners.

If he doesn't, he's earned a spot on your bench. The stakes are real, folks. Well, from a fantasy perspective, that is.
