Arsenal Transfer Rumors: 10 Players Arsene Wenger Should Pounce On

Thomas AtzenhofferJun 1, 2018

Arsenal made a great run towards the end of the 2011-12 season to finish third in the English Premier League. However, if Arsene Wenger hopes to push his club back to the top of the table and wrestle Manchester City and Manchester United for the title they will have to find a way to spend some cash on new recruits.

Unfortunately it looks like one of those ways is expected to come from the sale of star striker and skipper, Robin van Persie. After refusing to pen a new deal for over a year now, the Gunners are expected to be cutting their losses and maximizing on the players value this summer.

The sale of van Persie is expected to raise about £30 million and could fund multiple transfers of new players to the club starting with some of those mentioned throughout the follow roundup of players that Wenger should make a move for if he expects to get the most out of new signings.

Yoann Gourcuff

If anyone could pull Yoann Gourcuff out of the funk of poor form he is in it is Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman was dropped from the French national team before the Euro's and has been floundering around with Olympic Lyon for the last few seasons.

After a run of injuries have plagued him in France, he is yet to return back to full form. However, his potential was seen when he was with Bordeaux and during the first of his career at Lyon and there is no doubt it is still there.

Metro linked Gourcuff with a move to Arsenal in the January 2011 transfer window that never happened. However, recently CrunchSports have once again put the pair together for a possible deal worth £13 million.

Yann M'Vila

Rennes midfielder and French international Yann M'Vila has recently admitted to his interest in joining Arsenal, but it will be interesting to see if Arsene Wenger can tie up a deal for him after already looking to have spent just under £25 million between Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud if his move goes through.

According to comments in the Independent, M'Vila looks ready to jump at the chance to move to North London:

"

I have heard Arsenal are interested in me.

I like Arsenal and I like the Premier League.

I don't know what is happening with the clubs, but yes, I would be interested in the Premier League and Arsenal.

"

The signature of M'Vila would assure that the Gunners have ample time to develop Emmanuel Frimpong behind him.

Lucas Biglia

If a move for Yann M'Vila completely fails the next best option other than sticking with the club's current crop of youngsters, would be going for Anderlecht's Argentine midfielder, Lucas Biglia.

According to The Sun, Biglia is keen to move to one of the top leagues in Europe this summer and could be available for £8 million.

However, there is a thought that he is not quite up to the level of consistency it takes to be a first team player for a club of Arsenal's pedigree.

Fernando Llorente

Although he may not be quite the exact style of forward that is traditionally on the Arsenal front line under Arsene Wenger, Athletic Bilbao and Spanish international striker Fernando Llorente would be a great addition if Robin Van Persie were to leave.

Llorente has a massive buyout clause rumored to be set at £28 million according to the Daily Star, and the Gunners are thought to be in battle with North London Rivals Tottenham for the player.

However, with the club demanding £30 million for van Persie they could recoup enough to go for the towering Spaniard.

Ibrahim Afellay

Arsenal were linked with a move for FC Barcelona attacking midfielder Ibrahim Afellay back at the end of May, according to Metro.

Although a move for the Dutchman has not surfaced for some time, Arsene Wenger would be smart to make a run for the talented and versatile player while Barcelona are only looking for a fee of £6 million.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

6 of 10

If Arsenal are set to sell Robin Van Persie then they could make the most of their funds by signing his fellow Dutchman, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

The 28-year-old led Schalke 04 back to the Champions League places of the German Bundesliga last season and with his deadly striking form that was reminiscent for his days at Ajax Amsterdam.

Huntelaar has been valued at around £17 million according to the buy-out clause in his contract and could move this summer on the cheep if someone bites on the price tag.

Jan Vertonghen

The arrival of Per Mertesacker settled the nerves of a choice few last August for Arsenal, and the big German still has much to prove to the Gunner's faithful.

With Tottenham in slight shambles since the unexpected sacking of Harry Redknapp, the club could risk losing out on their move for Jan Vertonghen allowing Arsenal to once again usurp power in a potential transfer.

However, Emirates 24/7 are claiming that Spurs are on the verge of finalizing the deal while Arsenal has not made an improve bit for some time.

Alan Dzagoev

With the exit of Andrei Arshavin believed to happen over the summer, Arsenal will likely be looking to add a wide player as a replacement to fill his shoes.

After a stunning club season and equally impressive group stage performance with Russia in the UEFA European Championship it appears that Arsene Wenger could be on the lookout for yet another talented Russian attacker.

According to the National Turk the Gunners are set to make their move as soon as the dust settles from Russia's surprise early exit from the Euro's.

Clint Dempsey

9 of 10

Arsenal look to still be in pole position to sign United States international wide attacker, Clint Dempsey.

After alerting the top teams in England that he was searching for UEFA Champions League football next season in the Daily Mail, Arsenal look one of the top teams that could benefit.

Dempsey would have a place in the side with the imminent departure of Andrey Arshavin as well as additional players that could go.

The only downside of Dempsey is that he is already 29 and his age could be a deciding factor for Wenger.

Oliver Giroud

10 of 10

While it appears according to reports from BBC Sport that Arsenal have agreed a four-year deal with Montpellier and French National team striker Olivier Giroud along with a £12 million fee, it is still yet to be formally announced.

Signing Giroud would almost make the sale of Robin Van Persie possible as with the addition of Lukas Podolski having already signed it would be expected that the two could replace the Dutchman up front.

However, it is still unknown if Giroud will confirm the move before he is finished at the UEFA European Championship with France.
