LeBron James and Dwyane Wade Tweet Support for Trayvon Martin
When Trayvon Martin was shot and killed on February 26th, he was listed as a John Doe. The 17-year-old's death is now a national story that has reached well into the sports world.
The Miami Heat have made it perfectly clear what they think about the polarizing tragedy. Stars LeBron James and Dwyane Wade have taken to Twitter to show their support for Martin's family as they call for justice.
On February 26th, a self-appointed neighborhood watchman named George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin. ABC News has the timeline of events.
Zimmerman claimed self-defense when police arrived at the scene, and they never charged him with a crime.
The fact that a boy is dead and there is no closure as to why or how this happened has caused millions to hit the Internet in various ways to show their support.
Update: Friday, March 23 at 7:50 p.m. ET
One athlete showing his support for Martin is Amare Stoudemire of the Knicks. Shawnna Dior posted this picture of Stoudemire warming up in a hoodie prior to the Knicks' game vs. the Raptors in Toronto.
The Miami Heat are also among those showing support.
Following up on the myriad of "Million Hoodie Marches," James had the entire Heat team decked out in hoodies and tweeted the picture to his followers:
"#WeAreTrayvonMartin #Hoodies #Stereotyped #WeWantJustice campl.us/il4E
— LeBron James (@KingJames) March 23, 2012"
Here is the accompanying picture from James' Twitter feed:
Dwyane Wade also tweeted support of his own with a picture attached. It is of a somber Wade with a hoodie pulled over his head:
"#hoodies #stereotype #trayvonmartin say.ly/Jqz1CJn
— Dwyane Wade (@DwyaneWade) March 23, 2012"
This is a fluid and volatile situation that is taking over the national discourse. Our microcosm of sports is not immune to it, as athletes are no doubt affected by the tragedy.
I applaud the Heat for bringing attention to the subject that has a wide range of sensitive issues attached to it.
